Why do you want to move from shaw if you don't mind me asking? I'm pretty happy with my shaw HS.

with shaw you're sharing the line with approximately 500 to 1000 people. with telus you have a direct line to their office.

exactly what's happening on my end of the line
I have shaw xtreme yet on weekend evening, I can't play online games cuase of lag spike, I have to wait till like 2~3am when kids go to sleep to get steady connection
I'd rather have constant 1mb connection through out the day
yea sure shaw is blazingly fast after 2am but that doesn't count, i can't always be up that late when ever I want to do some fragging

Meh, Shaw's plan is hotter, IMO as you're getting 5 Mbit service instead of 1.5Mbit with Telus...

Shaw has a much higher potential speed, but if you download or upload a lot of material, you will get a telephone call from shaw warning you to not do it.

I guess it depends on your area; I live in an area with a lot of retirees and my Xtreme-I connection can get at least 8Mbit any time of the day.

Shaw's cap is 60GB vs Telus' 30GB, and Telus have predefined rates of $2/GB over that limit, whereas Shaw just give you a warning.

I switched from a third party dsl provider in vancouver about 1/2 a year ago. to test shaw's capability. Not liking it. Even though i get less bandwidth with dsl, i like the stability. works better with games, file transfers, etc. The times that people use their internet affect my work with cable. I'd love to get on this student plan. any additional details about what qualifies? I'm no longer a student :(

I never get a charge from Telus for over usage. There were a few months where I did a lot of upload (100GB per month) in a roll, then I got a call from Telus asking me not to do that.

I always do 200GB of download on a monthhly basis with Telus and they never bother me nor charge me any extra for over usage.

i have the telus version of extreme-i and i download lots of horse porn, mp3s, and so on, and i don't get an overtime bill. shaw on the other hand _will_ call you if you download or upload too much.

telus doesn't count nor do they bill for usage.

and the people on dslreports haven't yet reported any overusage bills yet either.

Nodes on shaw rarely saturate, but it does happen. So if it's slow, most likely it is some other reason. You can call to ask to check if there is node saturation. Also make sure you have the new DOCSIS modem. Try doing a speedtest at prime time 6-11pm without any routers and programs running and see if you get optimal speeds.

I consistently get 9MBPS on xtreme. Use speedtest.net.

The student plan sounds great. I've been meaning to change my plan for a while now. I'm with Telus but this plan is old and the charges seem to be more than their other plans of equal transfer rates/limits.

More details on the student plan?

It really depends on your area. Myself, I use shaw HS and i get 550KB/s down max all the time. However, my GF's connection in Richmond is like crap. So it all depends on the usage in your area.

Also, I hate the telus commercial saying that it's never shared...... The line must be shared at some point....

I think if one is crappy, then try the other. If both sucks, then you're out of luck.

$20/mth for HS service (whether it's shaw or telus) is hot.
