Looking for a reputable not a mcdojo gym. I have been wanting to do this for years, finally have a job where I can commit financially, however I can only commit in a certain way financially. I need a gym that:
-no 6 month, 1 year, 2 year, commitments. I am a university student and I do not go to school around Toronto or in the GTA. I am only back in the summer, so I am looking ideally for a 1 month membership monthly basis where I can cancel at the end of a month or whenever my period ends without financial consequences. This is the most important reason
-Place where I can train more than 2x a week, or maybe an unlimited package deal. I mostly want to do bjj and muay thai, but being allowed wrestling or kickboxing would be awesome.
-Has to be around the Markham/GTA area, nothing crazy far. I hear Mecha has monthly commitment, good price, but it is honestly too far. I work full time and I do other stuff as well. I am hoping rev mma fits my needs?
Also a few questions:
I pay for the classes for example say it is 2-3 x a week, what about practice? do i have to pay for practice time? or can i come whenever i want during OPEN mat schedules? do i need to tell my trainer i am coming to open mat? who do i spar with? whoever is there even if they are far above my level?
Long term is it better to train bjj and muay thai seperately alone, or do bjj and muaythai combined for say a MMA class? ultimately I want to do MMA...
Thanks.

practice = classes
there's action & reaction, around Vic Park and Finch.
http://actionreactionmma.com/
you can go month-to-month.
the reason why people sign up for a year is because the rates are lower if you do.
the instructor there used to teach at Rev, and left to open up his own place. most bjj students from Rev followed him to the new gym._______________

do you know approx prices? im looking to do bjj and muay thai. so for example i can pay for july and august, and stop since i go back to university in sept? i also checked their schedule and see there is 1 gi bjj class, 1 no gi bjj class, and 1 gi/nogi bj class. im looking to do mma ultimately, so im guessing i should do no gi? but that would mean possibly only 1 bjj class a week?
what are you thoughts on pound4pound, rev, salvosa? if action reaction can fit my needs then i may just go to them
if i go to classes what if i want to do extra time and roll and practice on my own outside classes is that allowed in facility?Last edited by Jordan_LB23; Jun 28th, 2012 at 12:29 AM.

I go to action & reaction mma. The owner is great to deal with and is very flexible with memberships. You can come in and try a few classes for free.

i wouldn't recommend stopping in sept.
you really need to commit, and train at least 2-3 times a week. you will make no progress if you train only for a couple of months and stop for a couple and cycle through start/stop.
and regardless of if you want to do mma or not, you will still benefit from doing gi classes.
i can't comment on salvosa, because i never trained there, although i met the instructor. he's a good friend of a friend, and he's been around for a long time in the toronto bjj scene. he was one of the first people to get involved with bjj in toronto.
Rev has the reputation as an expensive place to train. not sure about their price now though. i remember looking it up and they were charging over 150 a month, and that was a long time ago. i heard their bjj program isn't strong, because most of the students left to follow the instructor.
there aren't 'mma' classes as of yet at action & reaction, but as a beginner, you'd want to tackle the disciplines separately for a while, anyway. there are gyms that don't allow people to train 'mma' classes, until they have some sort of a foundation first in other martial arts.
what school are you going to in sept? it might be a good idea to find a place near school.
also, as a smart consumer, you should try out the gyms, before commiting. pretty much all gyms offer free trials. i would recommend trying a week or two here, and a week or two there.Last edited by ippon; Apr 15th, 2013 at 09:47 AM.

i want to train bjj and muay thai. i go to university in waterloo. however even if i find a gym there i doubt i have time to commit. that is why i want to train in the summer. i plan to do august and july right now and willing to train as much as i possibly can based on gym limits.
is there an approx price range per month at action reaction? i sent them an email and no response may give them a call later tonight when i get home and have time. i want to train atleast 3 times a week, preferably more and practice etc.

I use to train at salvosa/ascension bjj. Before I moved, and its a great gym for bjj.. You can train there every night if you like cause there's always people rolling around. During open mat. But if your just gonna try for two months you shouldn't do bjj cause its an art that requires years of practice to get great at certain techniques. Its a close nit gym a lot of the members have been there for years

I'd narrow it down to Action and Reaction and Salvosa's. Both are good and respectable in the community and known to not charge an arm and a leg.
Rev is known to be expensive. Ive heard that Rob Dicenso does teach some BJJ classes (do not know about striking) at Revolution now. One of the best guys that I have trained under and the highest placing Canadian ever at an ADCC. Dude is legit and awesome to learn under - just not sure about the price at that place or the level of the students (or size of classes now).
I'd check them out, make the decision based on which on you feel is the best fit for you.
Dragan's BJJ is out in the waterloo area and is a legit BJJ academy, not sure about the striking out there though.

I would love to train during school and plan on trying to find a way to do it but most likely I wont have the time, especially with my class schedule all spread out throughout the day, other things to do, transportation time
im new to whole mma scene is it frowned upon to train at different gyms throughout the year?

No, just expensive to do. I know people that train a multiple places. If you can not train during the year, training these 2 months will be pretty useless (good for fitness though) to train though. If you can train during the year then you can start now and just go somewhere closer to school when the time comes.
