Are there cheaper/free alternatives to having a landline?

We don't use our landline all that much and was wondering whether, besides getting a mobile phone (safety concerns on prolonged use), there are cheaper or free alternatives out there? I have internet connection so are there better virtual phones (with voicemail) available than freephoneline.ca which has had mixed reviews on RFD?

I have a daughter, who calls her cousins, aunts and uncles occasionally. This is the primary reason why I hesitate to do away with the landline because of possible undiscovered harmful effects of cellular electromagnetic radiation on the brain/human tissues.

Also, can I actually port my existing home number to my prepaid Rogers account? It doesn't seem advisable since I will have to pay to retrieve messages.

Thanks in advance for any advice on what kind of setup I should be looking at and how much these would cost. I only pay $22/month but then I'm not a heavy phone user.

This looks interesting. Can I get something like a Skype adaptor so it operates like a regular landline phone? I'll do further reading on some other threads on RFD. I only need local calling in and out of GTA really.
