Sorry, don't think you could do that - USB only supplies 500mA @ 5v, or about 2.5watts. Your DVD drive will use far more than that, I'm afraid...

Is there a self powered USB enclosure for DVDRs?
Hey,
I'm looking to put my A05 into a USB enclosure because I now have two computers and would like to be able to input the drive whereever I wish. My problem is that I don't want to have to use a power cord ontop of the USB cord. Any solutions?
Thanks

I looked for quite a bit for one of those, but I don't think there are. Now maybe I can find a portable dvdr for laptops or something that is solely powered by the USB.

Yes, but all of those appear to have external PSUs as well....I think the OP is hoping to run it SOLELY off the USB 5V, which I don't think is possible.

Interesting - I looked at the other two cables and neither of them has a connector that would fit that, but the site does say it requires no other AC adapter. I stand corrected. Or sit, with a bit of a slouch.

yeah in this shot you can vaguely see the power connector that's most probably wired with the USB-A and the PS/2 cable

The description of the second one says "Requires no AC adapter - Powers by USB." and it doesn't even come with an AC adapter.

when it says requires no AC adapter
that means it is only good for CDROM drives
or at most CD burners
burning DVDs would require more current than you can get from 2 USB ports combined
physically,i dont think it is possible

I asked a similar question a few months ago.
There are some slimline that just requires 2 USB plugs or a single firewire connection. I have to find the models again but the cheapest one I saw was $150 US for a 4x DVD+- unit. They can run off a single USB but only as a reader.
EDIT: these are not enclosures though but full units._______________
