Which of these laptops are faster?

So, here are the links:

I want to know which of these are faster for tasks except gaming since I have a PS2 for that. The Samsung is Quad Core but 2.2 GHz, while the Gateway is an i3 and has only 2 cores (heard it can act as a quad core), but it's 2.53 GHz.
So, will the Gateway be faster for dual-core tasks? Plus, do many apps actually use 4 cores?

Intel Core i3 380M @ 2.53GHz is rated PassMark score of 2,310 and AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N970 is rated PassMark score of 2,758.

I would go for the AMD processor since it is a quad core. The two laptops specs wise are pretty similar. If you are not too sure what the difference is in performance between cores and clock speed... basically if you run professional applications that can recognize and use more than two CPU cores, the Phenom II X4 N970 is a better option. But for regular use, they have around the same overall performance level.

Problem with power happy laptops is 1. heat & 2. poor battery life. Since you're not playing games on it why not look for something with lower specs.

define tasks. I would wager a guess and say that you'd not even notice a difference running everyday applications.

I would go with a different option....14 inch HP with AMD quad core A6-3400M at $469 at FS. This CPU has a higher score of 3393 than the other two. This CPU is suppose to run a lot cooler than your typical AMD based laptop.

The A6-3400M is in the same performance class as the second gen i5-2410M (with a 3327 score).

I'm lazy to do the research, but can you please explain to me if this AMD's quad core "APU" is better in performance than laptops with dedicated graphics (eg. i5-2410M and a ATI/Nividia GPU) at a similar price for gaming?

A laptop with an i5-2410M and a dedicated graphics card is likely rare (probably none right now) in the $500-$600 range. Others have posted that the A6-3400M with the integrated Radeon video is on par or may be slightly faster than an i5-2410M with the integrated Intel HD 3000 video. Others can care to comment on dedicated video cards....I am not at familiar with the recent video card offerings since I hardly game.

Dave, that was one hell of a laptop! So, good. The only problem is that I am going to university and I really need a number-pad. I know this since at home, on my desk-top, the number-pad is something I use a lot when dealing with many digits. Thanks though :)

I'm sure you could buy an addon keypad for numbers that plugs into a USB port. My Asus laptop comes with a full blown numberpad.

That's true. I did consider that before, but then it would be a hassle to be taking it whenever you need it and removing it when you don't.
