Hi all,
I'm planning to do a trip to NYC in November. As I'll be going by myself and I have a 2 weeks holiday I'm not on a tight schedule. I'll surely visit all the famous landmarks, and see at least one broadway show.
Any tips on getting deals there? I've heard that I can go line up somewhere to get cheaper Broadway show tickets, anyone have more info on this?
Also please do recommend any places that I should check out (shopping, sightseeing, restaurant..) anything... and places that I should avoid and watch out for..
Thanks for the tips
Vic

Broadway show tickets - TKTS in Times square. You can buy stuff for that day's shows at deeply discounted rates. IIRC cash only.
One of the best things to do is do a Gray Lines hop on/hop off bus tour of the city. Very informative and a good way to find your way around. A two day pass is about $50 USD.
Everything else in NYC is expensive. A hotel room for two weeks will be staggeringly expensive..good luck on that.
Otherwise, NYC is a good place...lots of hustle and bustle and completely unlike any other city in North America. I could never do 2 weeks there... 3-4 days is max for me before I go into sensory overload.

Here are things that I did when I was in NYC:
1] Like what BobW said, go to get the 50% Broadway show tix at Times Square the morning of the show.
2] If you like food (who doesn't), go to Carnegie Deli on Broadway near Times Square. The largest sandwiches you've ever seen. They taste great, but are pricey. Their cheesecake is awesome too! Go early, very long lineups. Avoid Katz Deli (the one in When Harry Met Sally), it's not very good. Also, if you like good pasta and large portions, go visit Carmine's.
3] Walk around in SOHO and Greenwich Village. Very neat shops, very neat neighbourhoods.
4] Do the various tourist traps (it's still fun), Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, UN building etc...
5] If you have time, go see the Cloisters in Upper Manhattan.
6] Take a walk in Central Park (daytime of course).
7] Check out The Plaza, very nice hotel. Don't stay there though, it's very very expensive.
8] If you like art, visit the many galleries and museams, esp. MOMO.
Some tips:
- take the subway and buy a pass for the 2 weeks, very efficient way of moving around town.
- Houston street is pronounced "How-stun"
- SOHO means south of Houston Street
- Tribeca means Triangle Under Canal
- Finding a public washroom is hard, remember to go before you leave the hotel and at any meals.
- Check around for better prices on souvenirs, some places are overly over-priced
- Do walk across the street whenever you want, much like the locals (you fit in better). Wait to cross the street on the street itself, all New Yorkers do that, they don't wait on the sidewalk. You'll look less like a tourist that way.

2) agreed with the Greenwich Village & SoHo. There are so many cool shops there. One of the coolest is the shop Evolution. Simply awesome.

I was there for 3 days last week. What I really liked :
1- Walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge. Incredible view of Manhattan! Make sure you start on the Brooklyn side of the bridge.
2- Times Square at night.
3- Rollerblading in Central Park.
Overrated/overpriced tourist attraction : Empire State Building.

Sep 28th, 2005 04:38 PM #12I believe the Plaza's closed. They're converting it into a condo or something. It had scaffolding and boards and stuff in August.7] Check out The Plaza, very nice hotel. Don't stay there though, it's very very expensive.
