Throwing out an old garbage bin

Hi all,

I have a few old garbage bins that were left by the previous owners. I don't need them and would like to throw them out. I've left them out during garbage day but they are never taken away. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm in Markham btw.

Thanks.

Put a note 'throw out/take away' on each bin. They thought the bins were just empty, normal bins.

Edit: Don't bother, the garbage collectors will not read the notes.

Do you have to call the city to schedule it? I didn't think the regular garbage truck would have space to store bins to haul off.

List them for free on kijiji and leave them out front with a note "FREE".

If you're able to store them out of the way, even behind a shed, corner of your yard, etc. I'm sure you would later find a use for them.

I keep my old bins, blue boxes, etc. and they're great for extra yard waste (if your municipality collects them in bins in addition to paper bags, like Toronto) , renovation waste, etc. where you don't mind that the bin is dirty or when has a crack or small hole.

Not sure where the garbage dump for Richmond Hill is but in Niagara you can dump hard plastics for free. You could give them a call, although if they're in decent condition I'd just put them at the curb with a free sign or post them on Kijiji / FB marketplace.

I have some pretty destroyed bins to get rid of.. they really have no use. One of my recycle bins is more duct tape than original bin.

You might be able to exchange it for a brand new one for free. Not sure if all cities / regions in Ontario do that but I know some do.
