NEW YORK (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc. will unveil a new high-definition DVD next week that could end the battle between two next-generation videodisc technologies.
Warner Bros., a movie studio division of the world's largest media company, plans to present the new disc, Total HD, at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Total HD movies will carry movies that can be played on high-definition DVD players that use technology backed by Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray format, as well as players using Toshiba Corp.-backed HD-DVD format.
The competing formats have been blamed for hindering sales of high-definition movies and players, with consumers recalling the bruising war between Sony Corp.'s Betamax videotape and JVC's VHS version. JVC is owned by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD offer crisper pictures and better audio.
The DVD format battle has split the film industry, although some studios, including Warner Bros., currently offer movies on both.
Others, such as NBC Universal's Universal Studios only sell high definition movies on HD-DVD. NBC Universal is a unit of General Electric Co.

It's not a new format but rather a combo disc.
I'm glad they're trying to make peace and do something Sony and MS won't do (unify)._______________
I'm on the road to 5000...

I don't think it actually benefits the customers. When they are making it one side HD-DVD, one side Blu-ray, or just putting two discs in the pack, manufacturing cost is doubled. Just look at current HD-DVD combo packs which have regular dvd on one side, and HD-DVD on the other side. the price is $10 higher than a regular HD-DVD.

How does this help? I hate it!
Let's see...
DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and now Total HD
I've accepted this "war" by buying both HD DVD and BD and I feel the consumer should decide. Not only will this Dual Format will just confused consumers even more but it will pro long it!
This Combo HD DVD/DVD would've been perfect but obviously price is getting in the way!Last edited by bembol; Jan 5th, 2007 at 05:19 AM.

What happens if Blu-Ray movies start coming out in more than one/two layers? Blu-ray allows for up to eight layers...

Yeah, Microsoft won't, seeing that they're not the ones who invented HD DVD.
