Tomato-Capable Wireless Router You Recommend?

Hey guys,

I have a WRT54GL (ancient, I know) and I'd really like Wireless-N and Gigabit Ethernet. I understand that instead of Tomato, I'd be looking at a modern fork of Tomato. I haven't been keeping up with the wireless world... Just wondering if anyone has a router and variant of Tomato they'd recommend for this purpose? I love the features of Tomato, and so I'd really like my new router to have all these features.

Unless you need 5GHz band, Asus RT-N16 gets my vote ... 32MB flash + 128MB RAM ... It fits all flavors of Tomato.

This is the one I've been using as well, and it's been great. Goes on sale pretty often too.

Cool. I had a quick look around and some people have complaints about overheating.. Is that still true?

I never had any issues at all with regards to overheating. Mine never really became hot at all unless you pile other devices on top of it or something.

Another vote for the RT-N16. I have Toastmans build of Tomato on it and the pre-defined QoS rules work nicely.

No heat or stability issues in the several months that I've owned it. Went straight to Tomato after purchasing it though. Too many horror stories about the Asus firmware. I suppose the only complaint I have with this router are the blue LEDs. They're pretty bright in the dark and the blinking is distracting but that might just be me. I'm a picky sleeper.

Even a cheap WNR2000 v2 will run Tomato USB Mini (around $20-25 refurb). Some have reported to run Toastman's version as well but I haven't had luck with it since firmware seems to be 20K above the limit. Maybe, select that straight from the start vs trying Toastman usb first.

Pretty happy with Teddy Bear (Toastman USB Mini) on my WNR2000. Although stock firmware was superb as well and included advanced features such as guest ssid, monitoring and QOS (although too basic)

If budget allows, I strongly suggest one should go for routers with at least 8MB flash. 4MB-only routers really limit the choice of firmware.

The linksys e3200 continues to be on sale at ncix for the past 3 weeks, but now with limited quantities. It has limited tomato support, and 5ghz may or may not appear down the road. it is a dualband router meaning you can use 2.4ghz or 5ghz or both at the same time.

The reality is that the ddwrt team is no longer really updating their free firmware, and it is the tomtao community that is making the updates.

It won't be an issue if you don't overboost the signal strength. If you leave the signal strength at default level it shouldn't overheat.
