Toronto electrician intake. 2018.

Hi guys.
The IBEW/JAC is doing their intake.
Particulars can be found here:

http://www.electricalapprenticeship.ca/apply

Kind of sucks that they are charging a non refundable 40$ application fee.
It's a good gig if you manage to get in.
This year the odds should be better because they are picking up quite a few pre-apprentices.

Starting pay as a pre-apprentice is 15.59 for May 2018. There is 10% vacation pay, RRSP, health benefits and other benefits.
44.56 for a journeyman and 51.29 for a foreman. Not a bad deal.

Right now it's pretty good.
No one out of work; apprentices or journeymen.
Our local is taking travellers from outside locals.
There is no such thing as residential electrician.
Low rise, high rise, institutional and industrial.
Line work is its own thing.

It's cyclical. I've been out of work for one week in a span of three years. It's still good to have a fallback when times are lean; cash job, Uber etc.

Regular week is 37.5 hours Monday to Friday.
Sometimes you get 36 hours Monday to Thursday. Everyone wants these.
I've been doing some Saturday and Sunday so that's 16 hours of double time.

No such thing as a residential electrician? Are you talking strictly union? Cause I know a ton of residential electricians..

It will help. If you meet minimums. Biggest thing is aptitude test and interview. Good luck.

Is it just for apprentices? What about non-union 309A journeymen?

Incorrect. 309c is a Residential only electrician.
Though it's silly to get, unless you 100% only want to do residential for your entire career.

In Ontario there are 3 classes of Electricians, 3 different tickets you can get/choose from.

309a - Construction and Maintenance Electrician (Residential, Commercial, Industrial)
309c - Domestic and Rural Electrician (Residential only)
442a - Industrial Electrician (Industrial only)

With 442a, it restricts you to only working Industrial, factories and such, for your entire career.
With 309c, it restricts you to only working Residential for your entire career.
With 309a, you can do pretty much any electrical work anywhere in Canada.

Isn't it all 309a now?
If you don't have that license you can't get it anymore?
So kind of a moot point.

ICI union electricians can take calls for low rise but not vice versa.
