Likely gonna be too cold this year. Anyone know of nearby side streets / plaza which allow for free/cheaper parking?

Sounds like you've never been before . There are no side streets or plazas nearby. Cheapos used to park near Rouge Valley Conservation Centre about 900m away but now they ticket there .

Parking at the zoo for a vehicle is only $12 ....

You can park at the Rouge Park parking lot across the street or around this area: https://goo.gl/maps/kAKeriTMxKs. They don't ticket north of Old Finch as it is recommended to park on the sides to access one of the Rouge Park trails.

There is side street parking available there. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Zoo gates.
