I'm still more of a fan of Media Player Classic, but I do use VLC for MKV files....for some reason, MPC can't FFD or REW through them on my machine.

CCCP HANDS down.
It contains every codec you will need and comes bundled with MPC (which I like better than VLC).
The codecs contained in the package also have the benefit of being tested as a package, so that there aren't codecs tripping over each other, trying to play your movies. MPC is also very light and is not a system hog.
Oh, and also has no malware.
Get it here
VLC is good as well, I just like the CCCP package better.

Generally, all you need is XviD for video, as it's almost universally compatible (eg. the MP3 format for video) -> http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/
Don't know about FFDShow, but for AC3, I use http://ac3filter.net/
BTW, pros don't get codec packs. They just download what they need
. Who wants bloat?

Wow, so much info. Now I am even more confused!
How can there be so many options for preforming the same task?
