Toyota Highlander 4 cyl FWD
Hi All,
I am looking into buying a used Toyota Highlander and I was looking
at the 4 cyl FWD model. Does anyone know if the 4 cyl engine is
adequate for the Highlander or is the 6 cyl better for the Highlander.
Also are there any major or minor issues with this vehicle?
Thanks

The highlander does come with a 4 cylinder engine, its 2.4l and about 155hp.
And not everyone needs AWD/4WD. Its a waste for 90% of the people that buy it (even on an suv).
To the OP my mom has an '01 4cyl FWD Highlander and loves it. The engine is a nice big 4cyl engine and does not feel underpowered in the least. She has about 200,000km on it now and has had no major problems so far.

I own a 2004 Highlander 4cyl FWD that you're descibing. Love the truck. Its great on gas and it picks up very well when needed. I too was thinking that maybe a 6 banger would be better, but after driving this 4 banger, never regretted it for a minute. I drove to Montreal last month, stopped at the Quebec border to get gas in Ontario, thus for exactly 500 kms, I only needed 36 litres to fill up the tank. My wifes 2004 Mazda 3 doesn't even get that mileage!!!!!! Because the truck is not 4WD, means nothing to me. The truck comes with traction control so both front wheels spin when required.
If I was to do it all over again, I would buy another one!!!!!
Good Luck!!!!!

Thank you all for the feedback.
Where is there a good Toyota dealership
in the GTA, Mississauga, Brampton area to
buy a used Highlander? Is it necessary
to buy an extended warranty with the Highlander?
Thanks again!

i only have one thing to add, the highlanders have a helicopter noise when you drive with the windows down, also the v6 have a throttle lag, it could be that some people are just sensitive to the feel than others
its a known issue at the edmunds forum
other than that, great suv, ranks right up there on the charts as best buys
i know you are looking for used ones but i just gotta say the 06 models look great with the new grill, the 07 model, i saw a pic of it, cant say i like it if thats the new design

Friends of ours have a Highlander with the 3.0L V6 and I think its underpowered. I can't imagine what the 4 banger would be like.

yeah i know V6 is underpowered too, but 4 cyl is even worse.........i guess if you need fuel efficiency it's okey, but then again if you need fuel efficiency why look at an SUV? i mean if you need that much space get minivan(Sienna), or a wagon or something along those lines.

2wd highlander has exactly the same ground clearance (6.9) as sienna.
Whats with all these toyota SUVs? How do they manage to make so many of them? What's the difference bewteen a 4Runner, Sequioa, and land cruiser?

What is the point of getting a FWD 4-cyl SUV? It won't tow much and traction won't be special, to me it makes more sense to get a small wagon or hatch.
