tracking traffic on wifi network
i have an internet connection shared via a d-link di-524 wireless router. there are about 6 people using the connection, and one of them is using most of it. is there any way to find out which computer is doing this? i tried wireshark(ethereal) but it only tracks packets from my own local ip address. also, once i find out who it is, is there any way to limit the amount of bandwidth this computer is allowed through the router?

Unplug the router and see who complains the most, then you'll know

You're not going to be able to do any of what you're looking to do with a di-524. The best you can hope for is to ID who's using the most traffic by using wireshark on a wireless connection instead of the wired one, but the di-524 isn't going to let you throttle them. You'll have to throttle them manually

I had a thread before [http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/s....php?t=345060] in regards to capping downloads per port...didn't work out in the end.
I ended up switching to an older linksys wifi router and put the dlink in the closet for the time being because the dlink kept dropping the connection (i figured it was something to do with the user connecting via wireless).
Anyways, not sure about the dlink but the linksys router has a "log" feature and i am able to see incoming and outgoing requests. Matched the LAN IP that was doing the most transactions to the computer in the DHCP table and put a filter on the IP for whenever I needed the bandwidth
. The user that was filtered was able to see network shares, but wasn't able to make outbound requests and inbound requests would get routed to the garbage. So it looked like things SHOULD be working, and by the time they complained I would remove the filter and things would miraculously work again
.
Anyways, good luck with that.
