Hmmm. The OP is still alive and kicking while these two gentlemen had been permanently banned.
How much is the going rate at tutoring centers for Grade 5-8 students in the GTA? Is it more expensive to hire tutors to teach children at home? Any chance I can hire a decent tutor for minimum wage + transportation cost/time?
If people lead busy lives and resort to take-outs, TV dinners, and other time-saving strategies, why are they spending so much time tutoring their own children and not hire a tutor instead?

Thanks!
We used Sylvan, it was very expensive but it did help lots. My son went from always having C or C+ in writing to having B or B+. Writing has never been easy for him but Sylav got him up to grade level and I would do it again if I needed to.

We used Sylvan in 2007/2008. It was $50 hr. Son went for 2 hours at a time twice a week (though after a while we did once I week I think).

Kids that are falling behind need extra attention. But you have to make it interesting for them. They found the subject boring, that is why they fell behind in the first place.
Not necessary a waste of money. when they need a push or when you want to develop your child's extra skill. thats where tutors and side education kick in. Extra attention is a parent's duty. Professional skills/subject in certain area are something parents cannot offer to their own child.
