F cable and go over-the-air with an ATSC tuner card. I love my 3 Hauppauge HVR-1250 PCI-e tuner cards.

In response to your PM,
this is a typical list and I'm getting the Buffalo and Toronto channels with an outdoor antenna (that means some setup and upfront cost for you)

The Theatre 550 is an analog tuner. That said, it has argueable the best pq of analog tuners. I have one hooked up on my main pc connected to by cable. Tv and recording quality is amazing. I'd suggest you look at your cable feed and how its split before your tuner...

I have a theatre 550 and a hvr-1800 and t5hey get the same picture. Your problems may be due to interference in teh low VHF band (channels 2-7). Try moving the cable run, or repositioning electrical equipment around the TV
