So I picked up a spindle of those Fujifilm TY DVD+R 100pk (MIJ) from FS for myself since it seems like TY brands are supposedly pretty good even though the Fujifilm ones aren't the best of the TY line. I just tried 2 DVDs already and I can't seem to write on them. I used several different programs (Nero, TMPGENC, etc) and nada. But according to others on videohelp.com who owned the same DVD writer as me (Sony DRU-710a) they've had success writing the exact same media (YUDEN000T02). My computer recognizes the DVD because I get those blank media option when I put in the DVD but I can't do anything with the DVD, it just stalls my computer when I try to write it. So do I have a bum writer or media incompatibility which seems wierd because other people were able to burn it. I don't really wanna call warranty on this because of just the Fujifilm brand since it works on Memorex so far, but it's really bothering me since I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong when others have been able to burn 'em
Things I've checked so far
-Firmware (BYX2 and BYX4)
-Software (I formatted my computer like a week ago)
-Other DVD brands (Successfully burned Memorex DVD+R and DVD-R)
-Bad spindle? (I had the DVD-R at first but exchanged today for DVD+R when it wouldn't work, same problem though)

i believe Sony and Lite-on drives are the same. The only times ive heard of people having troubles with Taiyo Yuden media was Lite-on drives. I'm not saying all sony/lite-on drives have problems with Taiyo Yuden media, but they are the only drives ive heard where people had problems writing Taiyo Yuden media.

Hrm, crappy low end version of Taiyo Yuden + Crappy useless POS DVD burner = poor burn quality results.
Sorry, I don't have much I can suggest beyond lowering the burn speed. Maybe check out the RPC1.org forums and see if there is a custom hack for the writing strategy that might have better results?_______________
Current DVD Burner Suggestion? Stick with Pioneer
Current suggested recordable media?
CD-Rs = Maxell CD-R Pro, Verbatim Datalife+, Falcon Media Pro
DVD±Rs = Maxell BQ Series, Verbatim, Falcon Media Pro
DVD+RDLs = Verbatim, Falcon Media Pro, MAM-A

Yep, might have to give up on these low-end TY discs. I just lowered to 1x, 2x and 2.4x and it still doesn't work. It's not that bad of a writer though. I've burnt tons of DVDs on Memorex but like Digital Dolphin said it's probably the combination of the two lower ends that caused problems. Not all TYs are made equal.

if you buy the 8x TY media at NCIX and/or blankmedia.ca, youre guanreteed premium line Taiyo Yuden.Last edited by rahzel; May 23rd, 2005 at 12:36 AM.

A friend who bought a Fuji spindle from FS brought a few blanks over the other day, and based on several scans on a PX-716a (and on his 1620), they appear to be just as good as the real +Rs sold as TY at 8x (and I've burned both at 16x without issue). It's possible the batch of discs you received is inferior--but there's no way they shouldn't burn at 8x as advertised. While it's possible you ran across a bad batch of media, I suspect the real problem lies with your burner. Since Sony messed booktype support (settings won't hold on eject) with one of its firmware updates, who knows what else was bungled. You might want to look at alternative lite-on firmwares and/or other firmware options (if you don't mind potentially voiding warranty and know what you're doing).
I've also read about people complaining firmware updates suddenly forced Windows XP to detect their Sony burners as cd-rom drives . . .
While I've seen quality control issues with all brands of burners, these lite-on/sonys take junk to a new level in my opinion. They seem (to me) to be better supported by end-users than by the actual companies that display their names on the drives.
The -Rs aren't TY (since they aren't MIJ currently), but if you can't write to either the -Rs or +Rs from Fuji (at any speed), this suggests to me there's something seriously wrong with your drive. Perhaps you had a bad firmware upgrade (retry), perhaps there's a driver issue (after a firmware upgrade . . . see above), maybe something was suddenly misaligned inside your drive, etc. . . .Bad spindle? (I had the DVD-R at first but exchanged today for DVD+R when it wouldn't work, same problem though
This may seem like a weird question, but do you have DMA enabled for your burner? I've seen weird things happen after firmware upgrades.Last edited by Webslinger; May 23rd, 2005 at 02:03 AM.
