Ultra cheap duct-cleaning on Groupon

Groupon constantly has <$90 duct cleaning deals (in the Toronto area)
I've seen as low as $49 for 10 ducts + additional ducts @ $10

Seems a little too good to be true

Are these all legit or is there a catch ?
Most important, do they do a decent job?
anyone have experience?

I cleaned my vents a couple of months ago and it cost me about $400-$450. I followed the guy around the house and he did a good job by spending a good amount of time on each vent. Depending on how far they drive, $30 might just cover the gas.

Probably a scam - low price to get in the door and lots of surprise fees. I know there's a lot of duct cleaning scams on Facebook - I think the biggest thing they are after is stealing personal info. Doubt Groupon would want to be associated with such scams though. I wouldn't expect much for less then $100

I remember seeing a marketplace episode on duct cleaning companies.

Bottom line is anything less than $300-400 is a complete waste of time and just moves dust around. A legit company that will do a proper job won't come out for anything less than that

Marketplace Episodes Quality = This Old House = something equivalent to journalism in SUN ( UK) Sensationalization.

Fact is even at 300-400 , its a scam. Dust in the vents does not enter your house. Their "experts" are biased and un-knowledgeable.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyl ... story.html

tldr:
the dust is in the path which is going to the furnace. the furnace filter blocks all dust. So every 5-6 years you can get it cleaned if you find that your air filter is getting choked too soon.
300-400 I don't know . Usually there is only 3-4 return air vents in the house which actually need to be cleaned. Supply vents ( registers ) already are going thru furnace filter.

Duct cleaning can be beneficial in certain scenarios, but in general these fly buys are a scam.

It is recommended to get duct cleaning after major renovations or when buying new construction. I called a reputable company to have parents ducts cleaned when they bought new construction years ago, I followed the guy around and he showed me before and after, mostly found saw dust and cement chunks. When we bought our new construction i bought a $30 telescopic camera in combination with my phone camera and cleaned all the ducts myself. Found a food wrappers in the kitchen but it was mostly saw dust and chunks of cement in tiled areas.

I've heard it's a good idea to get duct cleaning done on older homes as well. It probably is a good idea to do it if it hadn't been done by a previous owner and the home is 10+ years, who knows what's may have been put in there by previous owners or there children.

In general I'd say it is a scam, anyone with a phone and a shop vac clean 90% of the ducts themselves. If your in your forever home then sure pay the one time to have it deep cleaned for piece of mind.

Somewhere
I've done a bit of research and if you're in the GTA, looks like these three companies are pretty reputable:

Capps
Simmco
The Duct Cleaning Specialists
