ummm, why did my speed go down when I upgraded from Rogers Express to Extreme?
I've been with Rogers Express for a while now and always had good speeds between 350-450KB/s, since they recently changed their pricing structure I decided to switch up to Extreme since it's only $3 more. So I picked up a different modem today, plugged it in, and my download speed is only 250KB/s. What's going on? I should be getting twice the download speed, not half of it

in my experience, rogers tech help has been useless at best
figured I'd ask here first before phoning them and banging my head against the wall

Do a speed test with this:
http://speedcheck.rogers.com/
give the results to rogers tech support if they are not up to par._______________

It's definitely your flux capacitor.

what was the original modem and the new modem
Are you downloading from the same site?
The express can only go up to around 375kB/s with the old 3 mbps connection. I dun think u could have attained 450 unless it was for the first few sec of a download.
Go here and test ur connection and see if u get that 7mbps.

Click "show all hosts"
Select: TOAST.net (CA)
Test Shuttle + Text
See if u get around 7mb_______________

the speeds posted were a constant average downloading files from newsgroups through the same server that has always given me good constant speeds
the Rogers speed test shows 3.74Mbps, and the toast.net shows 687Kb/s
old modem was a Toshiba, current one is a Motorola. maybe I should exchange the flux capacitor?
guess I'll give the buggers a call

Oh man this is dissappointing!
I get low speeds for my Extreme connection.
That tester gave me 4.72Mbps download and 856kbps.
I guess the upload is within range, but the download certain isn't. Where's 6Mbps?!_______________

When I originally upgraded, I was connecting to my router using an old 802.11b card. I was able to get consistant 3mbit but since the limit was 11mbit, there was overhead that was bottlenecking the cap.
Perhaps this is your situation? If so, try cabled.. or a higher rate wireless. :P
I know it advertises 6mbit but that is only under the perfect criteria. For the record, regular highspeed is capped out at 384kb/sec (3000kbit divided by 8)Last edited by CodecX81; Apr 8th, 2006 at 09:16 PM.

Apr 8th, 2006 09:53 PM #14Seems plausible, but why am I only getting 4.72 and not 6? I certainly don't have the overhead issue.
