What's the orientation week like? Is it worth participating? I know I will be going to first few events like pizza with dean and stuff but some other stuff doesn't seem like it will be worth the time.

I guess it all depends on what faculty ur in. Some friends of mine in Rec and Leisure had a great time all the time during their frosh week activities.
As for me, I'm in the Math Faculty since I'm in CS and theres nothing too big to look forward too. The big events that all faculties participate in (like monte carlo night, toga party, etc) are fun and are a great way to meet people, but the math activities suck. Like they become very redundant after a day or so. And most of the stereotypical math students come out of their shell during the week to only go back in it. They'll run around talking, laughing and smiling all week long, and then once class starts, they wont even make eye contact with you.
Well at least that's my own personal experience.
Maybe it's because i'm a six foot tall black guy who stands out like a sore thumb in the math faculty. iunno, lol.
Just make the most of the week, meet alot of friends on residence ( not only partying friends, classmates as well), and if you don't feel like going to an event, don't go. Nobody is gonna hold it against you.

Definitely wasn't because of the way you look or anything. My brother is in 4th year at McMaster, he told me how there is alot of competition against each other, especially in the first year. It was especially strong in his university because apparently, it's not the marks that determine whether you go through to the next year, it's if you can make it into one of the "top" students.
I know it would be a great opportunity to meet new people, but I also know that it won't be the only way.
Do you know if we are allowed to "skip" events and just go some place else?

You already paid for it in your tuition so they have your money and could care less whether or not you attend. Not surprisingly that's the way it works with classes too! (:

It's totally worth it man!! 90+% of my friends right now I met during frosh week, or friends of friends i met at frosh week...
its not only activities with faculty or dean -- actually there was maybe 1.
We had scavenger hunts, mini-games, sports...just alot of fun stuff to help you meet the people in your faculty and residence...
do not miss!!...you could skip out on events u dont want to go to..I've done that, but dooo participate in the majority!

Hey guys. I'm about to head in to 3A biomedical sciences in the fall. I transferred to the program after my 2B term in biochemistry. Anyway, if you guys have any questions about UW and the faculty of science or what not, I'd be happy to share my experiences. Here are a few notes I'd like to add to previous posts that were made.
1) Going for the smallest meal plan is a good idea. Not sure how the adding money after you're done works but in my experience, most people don't even finish their meal plans let alone finding the need to top it up.
2) REV is the residence to be if you want to party. On a side note, there is a night club called Revolution (shortened to Rev, don't get confused). Oh...and starting this year, if you get an infamous triple room, have fun.
3) Wear whatever you want, whenever you want. No one cares...unless you walk around campus in your underwear or dressed like a hobo or something. Dress normally, you'll fit in fine.
4) Orientation week looks lame on paper, but if you go, you might actually have quite a bit of fun. You'll meet lots of people from your faculty and who knows, some of the people you meet during that week may become your best friends for the rest of your university career (if not life).
And...that's pretty much all I needed to say. Good luck in the future guys (and girls).

Hey guys, I got into REV! But I wondering, I haven't visited the Physical Activities Complex yet, but what's it like there? Membership? Do people workout there? If so, is it better than Rev's weightrooms?
Also, when everyone is studying during exam weeks, where are the best (quietest) places to study either alone, or group study? Cuz when I visited during exam week, I was wondering where all the students went lol.
Lastly, I was wondering where do you guys think you spend most of your time? In your room? rez? library? faculty? friend's place?
I'm so excited for the upcoming year!

You already have access to all the gym facilities when you pay your fees. I personalyl enjoy going to CIF (on the northside of Columbia) to work out...it's more roomy and has newer equipment, but it seriously lacks free weights (it's more of a "girly" gym). PAC is where you would find the testosterone. REV has limited equipment but isn't as busy as CIF or PAC can be.
There are a bunch of drop-in sports and activities scheduled throughout the week, check the campus recreation website for a schedule.
In terms of places to study, alot of people go to the libraries. Every building is generally open 24/7 so you can go study in a lecture hall or classroom if you wanted too. I either studied in the V1 great hall or in the SLC quiet room. the SLC quiet room is the quietest place on campus even if it's packed. Libraries can get noisy (especially DC)
