It's a very simply process and it will NOT cause any problems at all.

You can take it overseas and use it with a prepaid sim card so that you can make calls for a fraction of what Rogers will charge you for roaming. Unlocking is mainly for GSM/3G networks, no advantage doing it with a BELL/Telus CDMA device.

I've got a rogers pearl and not using it anymore, my wife is with bell but hates her phone, can I unlock mine and she can use it on bell? Data is not an issue as she only wants it for voice.

No it will not work, the pearl is 2G gsm, you need a cdma or HSPA device for bell...
