I unlocked the curve by myself in 10 minutes. It's quite easy...
But for $1, it's still a great deal.

Yes. Unlocking only removes the network restriction on your phone. What does the network restriction do, it prevents you from using other carriers sim cards. So if you go on vacation to USA, you can not pop in a prepaid AT&T sim card and save on roaming charges.
the software can always be upgraded and it is not restricted by a "lock key"

Before going through with this I decided to google... unlocking your phone apparently VOIDS your warrenty. I haven't found anything that confirms this 100%, but for me I would rather not risk it. I was just going to unlock my Blackberry just because; I have no need. But I don't want to void my warrenty.
So just a heads up to others....

voiding warranty
Hey i was just wondering, if i did unlock my phone and had to send it in for warranty would they be able to tell? If so could I factory reset my phone back to the 'locked' status so my warranty would not be void.

Unlocking your phone does not void your warranty. Rogers and Fido is willing to sell you the unlock code themselves. Last i checked they charge ridiculous amounts, 150 when i called 6 months ago. Give them a call yourself and find out.
Doing a hardware unlock does void your warranty. A hardware unlock is where the phone is opened and the ROM chip is flashed. This is very risky which is why hardware unlocks are not recommended.
However they are not always able to prove it. My sister went on vacation with a Sony phone and had some Joe do an unlock, well he screwed up her phone. When she got back she took it to Rogers and they replaced it. She had her phone for 3 months which may be why they gave her a new phone.

I did call Rogers. And yes, using an unlock code to unlock your blackberry DOES void your warranty.
The girl even checked with other people there, and also told me they don't support unlocking.
Now, it doesn't mean Rogers is going to check that your phone is unlocked if you run into any issues. But technically you are voiding your warranty. For me, it isn't worth it - I don't need my phone unlocked. So just a caution to others like me who are thinking about unlocking their phones for the fun of it. I mean, maybe these people don't even know what they are talking about - but still not worth it to me.

question
If you unlock you BB and switch sim card while on vacation, do you still get your emails pushed to your BB. I am no techie, but this would certainly save me money if it doesn't screw up my email access. I need my email access for work. Presently, I usually add a 1 month US calling package to my rogers account when I go on vacation to florida and then cancel it when I get back

Yes/no.
Varying opinions on this issue. 90% of the time, the guy in the store to do the exchange deosn't even know how to check to see if it is unlocked. Second the policy was directly related to 'modifying the operating system and/or software' on the device [i.e. debranding a Nokia N95, since ou completely change how it and what it loads up in the opening screen] Whereas the 'unlock' especially on a BB is nothing at all. It does NOT modify how the phone behaves, it simply allows it to work with other devices. Don't let senseless reps try and scare you. Like i said, majority of the Rogers employees won't even know what unlocking is, let alone how to check for it on each and every phone they currently sell...
