**updated Canon SX1 vs. SX10 vs. Older S5**

Right now I have the Canon S5 and I'm very happy with it. Some of the pictures I've taken with it are spectacular IMO. But I'm wondering if an upgrade to the newer SX10 in the future would be a good move.

The big attraction is obviously the zoom, 20x is a big improvement from 12x on the S5. Most of my photos are animal/nature based so the zoom is a major feature for me.

I'm a simple auto settings kind of photographer so the S5 suits me pretty well for the time being. Any thoughts?

It seems the improvements are very minor, and virtually none in photo quality from what I read.

So, you will be upgrading for the bigger zoom and that is it. I am not sure if the SX1 IS is coming to Canada, but that may be a better upgrade option (CMOS, 2.8" LCD, 1080P, HDMI, 4fps) than the SX10.

Of course, the best upgrade would be jumping to a DSLR, but I can understand why you would want to stick to a super zoom.

The SX1 IS, isnt coming to canada.

I read it on the DP reviews site that it's not coming to canada, and is only available in Europe.

If you want it, then you can go get it from Ebay, but it's around $800.
The SX1 IS is more of a full digital DSLR, and with $800, you can buy an real full DSLR.

Not sure if it matters for the type of photos you take, but keep in mind the SX10 is wider too. In 35mm equivalent, the SX10 is 28-560mm, while the S5 is 36-432mm. When I owned my S5 I sometimes wished I had a better wide end. However, IMHO I don't think there's much of an upgrade to be had moving from the S5 to the SX10. The SX1 is the real upgrade like previously mentioned, however it will not be sold in Canada and imported costs ~$700-1000 or something.

For what it's worth, I owned my S5 for 8 months and sold it before xmas to buy a Canon Rebel XS. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, but my wallet is hurting after buying the camera and a few lenses.

Well guys, to my surprise I was searching Henry's site and found the SX1. Looks like it got released in Canada. With a discount I have for only a couple more days, I can get it for $656.99 + tax.

So the question is, is now the time for me to upgrade to the SX1? I've got a nice tax return coming and am really tempted to put it towards this camera. What do you guys think?

The SX10 actually outperforms the SX1 as far as pictures go. If you want the HD video feature, go for the SX1. My opinion, I would go for the SX10. The price difference isn't worth it IMO.

Looking at the features quickly, the SX1 does HD video recording. I wouldn't pay $730 for a prosumer P&S considering I can get a very good DSLR body and lens for a few hundred more or less.

Seems like you like to play with the latest tech (don't we all?) so why not tip over the scale and go full gear towards a DSLR? Invest into a nice body and you can buy various accessories that suits your needs rather than keep buying a prosumer P&S. Since the SX1 is over $700, I don't think paying for a new camera that offers minimal performance/features is worth it. Investing into a DSLR will give you more of an edge.
