Upgrading Granite countertops through builder
Hello,
I recently received the pricelist for upgrades for the new build house I purchased. The price that the builder is charging for granite is $72/sq.ft. or $82/sq.ft. depending on the level of upgrade for the selected granite. Do you think that is reasonable? Do you know of any reputable and affordable places that I can contact for a quote?
Thanks so much for your help.
Edit: By the way, I'm in the GTA. The new house will be built in Caledon
Here is the floorplan. I estimated 62 sq.ft. of countertops.

Going through a fabricator will be less expensive than the builder. Builders usually tend to go with the lowest bidder and charge you way more.

in general, it's cheaper to get it done afterwards... in my situation, we were given a free upgrade to the 1st level of Granite countertops... we ended up getting quartz counters (level 3), but only paid the difference b/w level 3 and level 1... but outside of that, it's better to get it done afterwards... lots of great advice on the forums here on who/ how/ when...

For that price point ($75/sq ft) we got quartz installed during reno. Although the pricing that you have mentioned seems within the range of being reasonable, it is really the quality of selected granite and whether you like it. Doesn't hurt to call others for a quote (I would just check homestars and call the top 3 vendors).

ballers use granite.
the fit and finish is very important too. so make sure the builder uses appropriate method, technique and quality

For that price, I am sure you can find a solid piece elsewhere that is of better quality than what the builder would install for you. Unless you have "free upgrades", I would not pay the builder for such an upgrade, only the must do's when the house is built.

I would not rely on the builder for the above.

Thanks
Thanks to everyone for the advice. We had our appointment this morning and decided against doing the granite/quartz countertops with the builder. It became an easy decision because they were charging over $900 for the undermount sink. I guess we'll just do the counters when we close. Any suggestions on a good place to get them?

Not sure if anyone mentioned it.
If OP decides to replace the kitchen counters after closing, then OP should not have any ceramic backsplash installed in the kitchen either, by the builder.
It sounds like the builder is doing fairly standard charges. It is not cheap, but not outrageously expensive either.

i am moving into new home too in few months and builders prices are so ridiculous...They are quoted me 800 bucks to get a gas line for my cooking range, so all i am going to take in upgraded is that you cannot do it later or will be difficult to do later like pot lights, upgraded color paint(cheaper to get it done from builder) and fire place, rest all like hardwood floor, kitchen back splash. granite counter tops will be done from independent contractor.

It is about 25 to 50 bucks per sq ft...I believe that is the cost...for the installer
