What OS?
The first time it works, are you plugging it in before booting or after Windows has loaded already?

USB Port Problem need help
hello everyone,
i've got a USB 1.1 port on my laptop (thinkpad x20). Here's my problem:
upon first boot, the port reads successfully whatever i plug into it.
however, if i disconnect the drive (via the right and safe way) and try to reconnect it, nothing appears.
to overcome this problem, i have to restart the laptop and all is well again.
has anyone had the same problem? does anyone have a solution?
i've tried updating the USB drives off Ibm.com, but i already have the latest drives ( ~2001) .
thanks for your time and for any assistance you may offer.Last edited by Sonbuster; Feb 20th, 2006 at 09:01 PM.

OS : Windows XP Pro SP2
the first 'plug in' can occur either way. plugged in before boot up or plugged in after OS loads up.
however, if i remove it and decide to reconnect it later on, i would need to restart the computer.

Do you hear the ding sound the device is unplugged? How about when it is replugged? Does the USB device icon appear in the system tray? Just trying to figure out if XP is detecting the device being plugged in at all.
Do you have any other USB devices to test with?
Is there any USB setting in the BIOS?
Has this always been happening or just recently?_______________

when it's plugged in the first time i hear the ding and an icon with the green arrow shows up.Do you hear the ding sound the device is unplugged? How about when it is replugged? Does the USB device icon appear in the system tray? Just trying to figure out if XP is detecting the device being plugged in at all.
upon replug, nothing occurs. no ding, no icon.
i have an mp3 player, wireless usb and a portable hard drive, they all work the first time through, but once unplugged a reconnection a second time through will not work with any. ie. even if i plugged in the mp3 player, unplugged and reconnected the wireless, it won't read teh wireless and vice versa.
there is a usb port in the bios, it is enabled.
it just happened recently.
thanks. i hope i've provided enough info.

Try uninstalling SP2, reboot, reinstall SP2.
