Use Rogers router/modem combo as modem only?
My parents signed up for the Rogers $35 student plan (through my sister) and received the router/modem combo even though they specifically asked for the modem only. I set up a well thought out network in their house and I have no plan to use the Rogers POS router instead of the current Tomato-running configuration. Rogers refuses to provide them with a modem only, saying that the student plan promotion cannot accommodate that (obviously a lie, given that it is a specific option when signing up online).
Can the combo router modem be switched to bridge mode to act as modem only?
Thanks.

I bet it is likely possible.
The worst case would be just to use your personal router as a single client of that modem/router, if it can't run as a modem only.

if its that smc. that answer is no.
username and password to your device is cusadmin / password
you are however allowed to go to any rogers video or rogers plus with your hardware and request a basic modem. you must be the account holder in order to do this change.

Since Rogers has no MLPPP to overcome throttling, the benefit of getting a tomato compatible router has marginal advantage, except for the QAS.

That's what I told my parents to do. They replaced the combo device they got with the modem, at which point Rogers scaled them back to lite speed. They called Rogers and were told that they have to use the combo device to get the student promotion. Absolutely ridiculous.

I tried their wireless router. It is garbage. Sometimes we have 8 wi-fi clients running in the house (3 desktops, 3 laptops, internet radio receiver, smartphone). Multiple p2p clients running and torrents galore. It brings the smc POS to its knees while the Tomato-running WRT54GL handles it beautifully.
Dealing with Rogers brings back dark memories from trying to get things done with Bell Mobility...

with that much load, I see why OP needs tomato baesd router. you should also keep an eye on the monthly bandwidth. 95 gb wont make it through the month.

if you are on the student package, part of the sign-up process checks your modem and sends a provisioning to it to put you on the 10 mbit teer. once you change modems, you will no longer be on the 10-mbit teer any more, got it? so yeah u need to change modems "before" you perform the speed customization as part of the package sign up process. got it?

like i said get your modem swapped at rogers store. call tech support and it will go through its modem activation process and reprovision itself.
