Downloading tonight at 2.1 MB/S. Which is max for my connection. Using both us and uk servers.

Yes, looks like it just happened in the last few days. Their free account page now says "10 days" retention, compared to "900 days" for their premium paid service. Before there was no limit on retention, only on speed.
The first post should be updated to note that XSUsenet Free is now a fairly useless 10-day retention.
Also, the 100 Gbyte block for $5.50 deal at theCubeNet is sold out. There are still a few at $6.99.

could someone please update the first page from:
Xsusenet (1mbit speed limit, SSL, 400 day retention, 25GB/month) to Xsusenet (1mbit speed limit, no SSL, 10 day retention, 25GB/month)
it is quite a drastic change and should be documented so peope like me don't waste time trying out a useless service. I would remove it entirely but that is the forum's decision.

This is my first time using Newsgroups.
I downloaded Newsleecher as this is my preferred clients, easy to use interface.
My net connection is 20MBPS
i used to download about 80gbs a month with my torrent account before i got disabled.
Which is the best server to choose for me?
also for NZB i will be paying the $10 for NZBMatrix

Just curious (a newbie at this since the old Agent client days back in the 90's). If one checks every week for newsgroup files, wouldn't the 10 vs 500 day not make a huge difference?
Seems the retention period will only matter if one checks every 11 days or longer or if someone is new to usenet and would like to obtain files from the various servers dating back longer.

True, but unless you check diligently every day, the chances of a part being missing with 10 day retention is just too high.
There are probably two basic models for using usenet:
1. You're an obsessive downloader who checks every day and downloads everything of any interest. You need an unlimited internet account, and you're hardly going to be satisfied with a very slow free usenet service that allows only 2 connections. You'll want a high-limit/high-speed premium usenet service.
2. You go to usenet to find items of interest when you hear about them elsewhere. Probably these are way over 10 days by the time you hear about them and get around to checking. You don't download a lot, and you don't mind a slow speed, but you need as long a retention as possible. A block account is probably best for this, but the former free xsusenet account was also good.
A free usenet service with slow speeds and only 10 days retention doesn't satisfy either of these principle uses, although there could certainly be other types of users.
For me personally, I'm using Shaw cable, and they're one of the few ISPs that still provides free usenet, with about 60-day retention.

I think it's good as a backup service for TV downloads. It's not a good primary service though based on the limits and retention.

Thanks, it's been updated. It's only really useable for very light users or as a backup for TV downloaders. But it's still free and some users can still probably get use for it.

Has anyone tried Xsusenet's paid service? Price wise it's not bad, and comparable to Sunny if you want a fast speed limit (advertised as 100mbit). And it's also shareable between 4 hosts. It's 60 euros per year, which is about $75CDN... and if you split between other people, it's really cheap.
It's been added to the first post with a disclaimer saying that the provider hasn't been reviewed/tested by users yet. I will update accordingly.

I assume you are new to usenet as it is physically impossible to download all headers from all popular groups every 11 days given the 1mbit limit. and that isn't counting that you need to get the last 11 days to start off which is a big chunk right there

Yes, I'll admit I'm a newbie at this. I don't think the speed has changed for the free xsusenet accounts, just that SSL is no longer supported, it's now limited to 25GB/month, and retention period had been limited to 10 days.
That is supposing I just have 2 connections, correct?

Don't need to do this assuming you use an NZB indexer or search engine.

Anyone hear of Gibinews.eu?
Found it today. Signing up gives you 3 days and 5GBs free. They have 1200+ retention and I am easily maxing out my 28Mbit line with 10 connections (hit over 5MB with speedboost).
Best part is no CC, no paypal, no email confirmation. Just register on the site and you are automatically given your details to connect to their server for immediate access.
Perfect if you just need to grab a few things off Usenet but don't want to pay for a monthly subscription.
