I was reading a review and it mentioned that the plot twist at the end was telegraphed and obvious. If it was then I missed it because I didn't see anything in the movie that revealed it. But, I agree with you about the pre-conceived expectations people have about a M. Knight Shymalan film. He should have released the film under the name Anonymous.Originally Posted by Hanniganite

In addition to what you said, it's also a social commentary. This seems like a movie that's a love it/hate it as exampled by Ebert/Roeper's reviews. But I liked it, and it was free

Aug 6th, 2004 08:50 AM #33Exactly. Thus why I called it a romance... it really was lovely in that respect.

I was really touched by the love, I always love a romance, so it's all good

Aug 6th, 2004 10:40 PM #34are you serious? I have a completely opposite opinion...I thought the Sixth Sense was his best work, with Signs being his worst....haven't seen The Village yet, but with the way the reviews are going I don't think I'll even bother...

I thought signs was kind of weak, but still entertaining. My fav movie of his is unbreakable. Might go see village tonight.

This is so funny... Sixth Sense blew me away. Unbreakable seemed quite weak to me, and Signs was SOOOO scary, I really enjoyed it, thought it tied in really well. I'd rank the Village a little above Unbreakable...

My review!
I enjoyed the movie from the begining to the end! I think the Village is good because it really offer me a lot of things: Romance, hate, love, excitment, a little twist, and some meaning. I love the directing of this movie.
If you just enjoy plain scary/creepy movie, then the village is not the movie for you.
Some people said that "The sign" is bad. But I totally love that movie. If you didn't understand why at the very end the father of the boy said, "thats why you get ashema!" Then i suggest you watch the movie again.

They are all slighly different genres
I think the reason why some many people have so many varied responses to M. Night's movie, is because they expect to see the same kind of movie from him.
IMHO Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and and the Village are not all from the same genre.
They all have some elements of creepyness or spookyness but thats where it ends.
Unbreakable has the (super) hero element, Signs has a religious element, and the Village has love.
So arguing over which one is the best is pointless, since you are not comparing apples to apples.
And for the people who find it hard to believe that people would reject modern conveniences, we do have people like that around, they are called Amish.

Just came from seeing this THING tonight. I thought it was a movie that could have been so much more. The story itself was very original if you stop to think about it. Nothing scary and not to spoil anything.....
but...... I knew the final twist was coming when the first one was revealed.
and this is my 100th post
Anyway, at least I can say I saw it and as others have said, Ivy was the ONLY thing this movie had going for it.Last edited by Fitty Beer; Aug 10th, 2004 at 09:57 PM.

M Night is reportedly getting sued by someone for ripping off their story which was written in 1995, which is basically the same story as the Village
A similar thing happened to him after Signs came out, which he reportedly ripped off another woman...
heard this on the radio this morning

Yup, I don't know if it was a coincidence or more than that, but judge for yourself:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...23828?v=glance
Jessie Keyser, 13, believes that the year is 1840. In truth, she and her family, along with a small group of others, live in a reconstructed village viewed by unseen modern tourists and used as an experimental site by unethical scientists. Jessie discovers the truth when her mother asks her to leave the village and seek medical help for the diptheria epidemic that has struck the children of the community.

IF YOU GET BORED EASILY, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE.
This is not a horror or action movie. THIS IS A STORY WEAVED INTO A MOVIE MIXED WITH SPELLS OF SUSPENSE.Last edited by bembem; Aug 16th, 2004 at 01:36 PM.

I enjoyed it, I really didn't see the ending coming, and it didn't even occur to me that they may have been rejecting another civilization, but rather that it was just another village somewhere in 18th century America, that just happens to have creatures in the woods. After seeing it, I do have to say that it seems like it may actually have some social commentary in it, about using fear as a form of control.
