Viral Marketing- Movies
Ok, So I was in states and saw reetard ed* billboards such as these below:
http://www.filmjunk.com/2009/06/02/d...-bus-shelters/
http://www.scifiscoop.com/wp-content..._advert_21.jpg
(I am not sure how to post the pics, feel free to fill me in)
I am not sure about you, but those looked like legit signs, and I was like wtf, what do they mean non-humans? the states is really messed, lol, then I assumed they mean animals since a lot of the billboards where on highways, such as deer or skunks or roadkill animals whatever...but I still was not sure why they referred to them as non-humans..This was only seen in states, not Canada, not sure if they are doing it here..
So then I recently just discovered this was advertising/marketing for a movie (District 9) apperently to get more people to watch...
This was realized after seeing a TV ad about an "Institution for human continuity" (http://www.instituteforhumancontinuity.org/) which I was like WTF when I saw the TV ad (in Canada, youtube it) and I was like is this for real, how could they advertise such a thing lol, I dont believe in the whole theory anyways, but I was just surprised of such advertising..then I realized again, this was ADVERTISING/ MARKETING for a movie (2012, which looks good btw, but its just a movie..at least to me)...So my question to you:
Is this going a little too far? do you think this stuff should be allowed as it looks very realistic and one can only find out its advertising/marketing after some research. Is this going overboard? ( I know the non human ads had a link to D-9.com or something (which shouldve been a hint) but I never ever noticed that until I re-saw the signs online, as your focused on the other stuff when you see the real thing...
You should probabaly be filmilair with the sites and ads I mentioned to give an opinion on this.. Have you experianced previous viral mkting for movies like that? I mean its unique and a good way to get more attention, but its a first for me..must be a new thing..
Sorry about long post, no, I will not start a blog lol so dont make jokes, feel free to shorten it if you want..Last edited by jl319; Aug 28th, 2009 at 03:57 AM.

Burger King' s ''Subservient Chicken ''
Remember Burger King' s ''Subservient Chicken '' ? I think it is one of the best Viral Marketing campaign , it rackedup around 46 million views in the first week . That chicken-suit-garbed man just too funny.
There is no doubt that the Video Ad platform, especially Youtube, is the most effective marketing tool .
Btw, check out the new video project ''The YES Movie'' by Louis Lautman, a business documentary you might enjoy. Thanks.

I saw them while I was in LA. I think they're great. Good marketing, obviously caught your attention.

You think the Billboards are ********, yet they were able to get you to come on this message board and start talking about this movie, something you likely would not have done otherwise.
You on the other hand, were not able to figure out a fairly obvious viral marketing scheme.
So ya, the billboard is definitely the ******** one here.

I do mean to be insulting when I say the OP is pretty clueless.

When you saw Starship Troopers and saw the news reports of Alien insects, did you panic and buy a ton of food and prepare your underground shelter?? lol

FWIW, I watched the trailers for the film and it looked interesting - thought-provoking, deep, well made.
And then someone mentioned Cthulhu. And I laughed a bit because if Cthulhu were anthropomorphized, they would look like the aliens in District 9.
All that aside, if all movies were advertised the same - traditional 30 second television commercial, print ad in newspaper - no one would know what movie to watch because nothing looks particularly interesting. Viral marketing is the only way some movies can get a step ahead of the competition - by catching the eye in such a unique way that you can't help but be curious.
As long it doesn't hurt anyone, I have no problems with viral marketing._______________

There was one by my house in a bus shelter. Then I went down to downtown Toronto and saw a lot of these posters. I thought it was pretty clever.
And it's not just the states, but right in your own backyard.
So good try at starting a Canada vs US debate._______________
