[Visions Electronics] HP Elitebook 8470p - i5-3320M, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Win10 Home (Refurbished) (In-store only) - $298

We were talking about this laptop over at this Black Friday thread:
laptop-under-400-canada-2141946/

And thought it might benefit those who don't frequent that forum.

Pretty good specs for a decent, performing laptop at this price range (14", Ivy Bridge Core i5-3320M, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 10 Home).

Add $100 more for 16GB RAM:
https://www.visions.ca/catalogue/catego ... ctId=36945

In-store only deal.

Same deal is available at Staples for $295 (OOS):
https://www.staples.ca/en/HP-Refurbishe ... CA_1_20001

Staples also has the same model with a 128GB SSD option and 4GB RAM for $299 (OOS):

For *COUGH* only $200 more, you can get this:
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

Comes with the 2nd fastest mobile processor of that generation, and a Quadro K2000M

Has the potential of getting up to 32GB of RAM. Perfect for anyone / students doing 3D / CAD / video workflow rendering.

Might as well buy a better spec'd laptop on Craigslist. You can get an ASUS or Dell 13" ultrabook used at that price.
Mobile "workstations" targets a different market / not the ultrabook market. The reason why I bring this up is because OP is regarding 8470p. The "p" refers to the professional series. Some might want to get into the "w" series (e.g. 8570w)...and in that case, the M4700 could be an alternative.

Well, you're paying close to double for that laptop.

Depends on your needs I guess.

Why is the 8460p not a better deal?

What was your configuration and how much did you get it for?

That 8460p config uses a 2nd-generation Sandy Bridge processor:
https://www.visions.ca/catalogue/catego ... ctId=33304

But it does have 12GB RAM.

The one in the first post uses a 3rd-generation Ivy Bridge processor, but has 8GB RAM. 8GB RAM should be enough for most regular users.

Up to you what you prefer.

I have 2 x 8460P's in my office, both running the latest High Sierra. You'll likely have to replace your wifi card as I did, but they're running great. I've been doing "tosh" for 7 years.. I can tell you that TonyMac method does not work on Elitebooks. Cheers

Thanks OP! Just checked it out in my local Visions.... very nice!

Unfortunately while their stock showed as two, they couldn't find them - then said they found one, but it was open box - then changed course and said no, they system showed it as open box but it was returned for repairs. I offered to buy the display model, for which they offered me a discount of zero. So walked away - but still recommend the laptop, the screen was full HD and looked great (to my untrained eye). They did have stock in another store (SE Marine Drive, for anyone in Vancouver), but said it would take 2-4 weeks to get it in house.

There was a guide on TonyMac on 8x70 with AMD. I followed that guide and was pretty straight forward. It seems that guide was gone now.

AMD is not natively supported, iNtel only
