Good deal for beginners but you'll quickly grow out of these knives if you're serious at all about cooking.

As a beginner myself, I'd recommend a Victorinox Fibrox and a steel rod. A little more expensive, but it's got an amazing bang for your buck.

I have the same knife and the edge chips / flakes when I'm sharpening it

Is it just me being a poor knife sharpening guy?

I've been using it for 6 months or so without any issue so far, but I'd advise you to ask your question here https://www.reddit.com/r/chefknives/.

Meh, I've owned this set for a few years now and this set sharpens very well. You're not going to want to break down an entire pig, but the majority of uses will be covered.

true to a point.

But as the great fighter pilot Chuck Yeager said "Its the man, not the machine"

I mean I wouldn't recommend someone buying a $100 knife for their first knife, but I also wouldn't recommend them buying anything other than the 3 piece set for $20 to get started. I bought one of those 7+ piece Henckels international knife blocks when I was in university and it treated me well but I really only ever used the chef's knife, bread knife, and pairing knife. Once I got my first Zwilling 3 piece set for $120 on sale through the Zwilling website I haven't even considered looking at any knife that is less than $50 and have slowly added to my collection knife by knife. In retrospect that old knife block was a waste of $100 and would have been better spent on the 3 piece Zwilling. That's why I would recommend anyone who knows they're serious about cooking to just get the right knife the first time. These knives probably aren't much of an upgrade on whatever you're using right now, unless you're one of those heathens who use a serated steak knife to cut everything.

Still might find in stores for the same price, YMMV: https://stocktrack.ca/?s=wm&upc=400983930585
I found this in store. Although the description on Walmart website said “German”, it was made in China. It was stamped on the blade.
