No only a 7th gen dual core CPU, the new 8th gen gora similar price are quad core. Plus I prefer to buy a ThijkPad with a HDD and put in my own SSD. You don’t know what model of SSD you’re getting, it’s random and could be a fast Samsung or a slow Toshiba.

Sorry for being off-topic here. About 5 years ago I bought a new Lenovo IdeaPad laptop with the intention of taking out the HDD and putting in my own SSD.
Unfortunately, I found out at that time that Lenovo had included in their laptop's BIOS a short whitelist of approved HDDs and SSDs (only their own brand, obviously); any non-whitelisted SSD would simply not be recognized. At that time, I swore off Lenovo for life.
Has this problem been fixed lately (ideally without the need for installing a sketchy cracked BIOS)? Thanks in advance.

$700.40 before taxes for a ThinkPad E485, with an upgraded FHD screen, and 8 GB RAM. Use the THINKPADSAV15 code which saves you the 15% to bring down the $824 to $700.40. Then use Ebates to save another 10%, so $712.31 all in (after taxes and Ebates). That’s a good deal.

I got one, works great. You can throw in a WD Black PCIe NVMe SSD 500 GB for $209.99 form Newegg Canada. $125.99 for the 250 GB model.

Yes if you google the issue the newer laptops aren’t limited by the model of SSD you can put in it. I recently got a ThinkPad E485 and put the new WD Black NVMe SSD in it and no problems. The WD is not an OEM drive Lenovo would put in their laptops so no limitations. And surprisingly unlike the T480, E480, E580 which only supports 2 lanes over the PCIe 3.0 bus, the new E485 supports 4 lanes so you get the full speed of these new SSDs. The PCIe 3.0 x4 is a steal at this price given the price of the other current ThinkPad models.

I tried to emulate your config and it comes to 800$ before ebates. What are the specs config?

Starts at $714, then plus $41 for FHD screen and plus $69 for 8 GB RAM, so $824 before the THINKPADSAV15 coupon code which you enter once you’ve added it to the cart.

$824 less 15% is $700.40. Of course don’t forget to use Ebates before starting all this.

Thanks!

I realized why the price difference. I chose "none" for hard drive for -94$ but it actually increased the price Face With Tears Of Joy

The Ryzen processor is slightly faster than the ideapad's corei7-7500U

so that would the walmart deal very cold. Especially when you get it at 700$ plus ebates!!

If you get the 4+4 GB RAM then both slots are in use for a total of 8 GB.

I got the single 8 GB so I can upgrade to 16 GB later.

are they soldered onto the motherboard?

if both slots are in use, then that still means that I can remove one of the 4GB and add an 8GB?

what's the wisest course of action here?

They are not soldered, so you can replace both RAM modules. But it is always recommended to match memory size and speed in each slot so they run in dual channel mode. So 4+4 or 8+8. Running 4+8 will result in single channel mode / speed, not advisable for the built in GPU.

4+4 is likely more than enough, I did the single 8 cause I have a Best Buy gift card I’m going to use to buy another 8 GB module.

Up to you and your budget. But I just recommend not sticking to only 4 GB RAM.

Based on the model #, it is 710S Plus which is lenovo's higher end consumer line. However, the newer 720s has thunderbolt 3 - this one doesn't. the current back to school sale on lenovo.com with coupon and ebates is much better.
