There isn't much to see. Just take a 30 minute ferry to see the little islands.

The Thousand Islands are a very nice destination. Tons of little bed and breakfast establishments and lots of hotels. The link from logic is great.
The boat tours from various locations are a nice way to see the area. the cottages on those islands are something to see. There are also fantastic little resturants in the area.
Everythime we have vistors from out West or elsewhere, they always ask to see the Thousand Islands and therefore have been there often. Well worth seeing.

Its a beautiful place if you are visiting for the first time. I was there 3 weeks ago and took a tour from Gonanoque tour operators. They take you around or to the castle if you have proper ID. Unfortunatley, i could not go to the castle.
If you are citizen, you must have passport with you. A valid visa is required for PR.
Dress warm as its going to be on the chilly side.

Cdn Citizens don't need a passport as of yet, but you require appropriate proof of Citizenship, which would be drivers license WITH your birth certificate. But yes, PRs need a valid Visa for entry.
Gananoque is definitly a very nice place to stay. You're almost out of season though as small shops and stores will be closing down for the winter, but there should still be stuff open.
I'd recommend taking a Gan Boat Lines tour.

Asking and needing are 2 different things.
A passport is always prefered.
