Hint 2: If parts are missing from an item you're selling, be sure to disclose this beforehand.

Warning: Always deal directly with a buyer and not an intermeditary
Hint to other sellers, always insist that the buyer deal with you directly and not through an intermediary. e.g. Should someone's dad decide to do the pickup instead of the buyer themselves and then they decide afterwards that they are unhappy with what they receive post-payment and start complaining, there is not much a seller can do.
For the buyer: You delegate your responsibility to someone else, you need to own up to it. The seller's motivation is to sell, by inspecting and then providing payment and complaining afterwards is not acceptable. There are other potential buyers for the product. Who will compensate the seller for time and inconvenience? You cannot renegotiate a deal after it's concluded. Sellers are typically individuals, not large corporations able to absorb various costs for marketing and good will. Most products are sold at a discount and margins are non-existent.

Hint 3: While this should be included in the common sense category, if it is too good to be true, most likely it is too good to be true. Think about it.

I don't see the problem with dealing with intermediaries. I don't live in Toronto, but a friend of mine does. Whenever I have something to sell that would be too expensive to ship, I just drop 'em off at his place. He meets buyers for me because I don't live in the city. I've had no problems so far after doing this a couple of times.
