Wasabi sets a new standard to AYCE Japanese restaurants !

I guess Wasabi sets a new standard to all other AYCE Japanese restaurants. I have tried many of them. Actually whenever there is a new one opens, I usually go try it out. I guess I have no loyalty to them  . I think Wasabi has the nicest decor (including the washroom), and by adding salmon sashimi on the lunch buffet menu sets a new standard and make them outstanding to competition (I have discussed a bit on the other thread http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2098803#post2098803 ), also todlers under 4 yrs is only $2 for lunch. That can draw lots more business from families with young kids. (lot of my friends don't want to go to buffet because their kids got charged $8-$10 for lunch and they don't eat much)

For me, the only thing Wasabi might need to improve might be the service. Not saying they are bad, but just a bit slow when they get business (but I guess this is common to all AYCE Jap restauarants). $10.99 for Jap Lunch All you can ORDER, with sashimi and nice decor, whatelse can we ask more !
$10 can barely buy a lunch Teriyaki combo box in the downtown Jap restaurants.

In additions, I think they are located in a nice and new plaza too. That area is growing fast and will be even blooming when the new Pac Mall extension and the new Chinese Mall (at the old [rfdlink=/forums/autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=35]Canadian Tires[/rfdlink] location) open.

i've been to wasabi once, and i was only impressed by the decor.

i went on a weekday for lunch, and i think probably 30 minutes after they opened. my party was the first in, and it took them 20 minutes before they took my order. in that 20 mins, i think around 3 parties came in and 2 of them were friends of the waitress or owners of wasabi, and they ordered first...service was really bad..didnt like it..and the food was average. only positive thing is that they have sashimi for lunch.

That's why I was saying, the main thing they need to change is their service. I guess they are having too many young waiters and waitress, not enough service experience. And may be not enough waiters/waitresses at all. You know this All You Can Order style are just giving all staff in the restaurants super extra work to do !!! Imagine the # of orders they have to take per table, # of dishes they have to do per table !!! They could be working the same hours as before, but 2-3 of work load. I feel sorry for them ! Working in the chinese restaurants industry is no fun at all ! Working in main stream restaurants, each waiter might only take care of 4 -6 tables at most, 2 rounds a shift, plus better tips !

summary:

"To be completely honest, keep the decor, keep the name, change the 4 'sushi chefs' at the bar to bubble tea drink mixers and put drink shakers in their hands instead of knives. It would be really really easy to make the switch over, but I am not even sure if they are competent enough to serve drinks correctly. With the blaring mandarin music, less than quality food and tremendous lack of service, I really suspect that serving sushi is some management's wet-dream gone seriously wrong. Its like they were going to be a bubble tea bar and suddenly jumped on the sushi bandwagon."

Sorry So7 is still the standard. Decor means jack for AYCE. You're going to eat not to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere. Those are just bonus points. I've been to Wasabi and like someone else mentioned it's only the decor that impressed me. Food was mediocore.
