Off the top of my head (in wordpress):
Page titles aren't properly formatted
Dupe content will kill your rankings unless you install the SEO plugin
No XML Sitemap (you need a plugin for that)
Got news for you smart ass... an xml sitemap does nothing for rankings or seo... and yes... Joomla out-of-the-box is dead in the water when compared to wordpress...

There is no way I can talk seo with anybody who believes it can be done with plug-ins...
Um.. yes it does. It allows you to give google an easy to crawl document. This in turn will enable more of your pages to get into the search engines and the more pages you get in, the higher your chances of getting a placement in a long tail keyword search.

From the .. Google site
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/
Q: Will a Sitemap help me rank better?
A: A Sitemap does not affect the actual ranking of your pages. However, if it helps get more of your site crawled (by notifying us of URLs we didn't previously didn't know about, and/or by helping us prioritize the URLs on your site), that can lead to increased presence and visibility of your site in our index.

Matt recommends the SEO Title Plugin to swap the name of the blog title with the name of the post titles.
Edit: One more

So tell me, why is Joomla dead out of the box when it comes to SEO? I've backed up my wordpress comments (and can provide more if you're like).

Google jumps on a page as soon as it sees a link to it... it's one of the most aggressive crawlers out there... watch your server logs... make your site crawlable to begin with... it will not give you any advantage... in fact... if you screw it up you stand more chance of doing more damage than good...
