weird problem with car sound

got my 2002 elantra and audio system (factory) that has had no problems for 5+ years.

this morning i got in my car, and heard a small little pop come out of the speakers (kind of like when you plug a cable into an amp).

anyways, my radio/cd player since has been working on and off. if i turn up the volume all the way, i can hear two pops for two seconds and the silence for 4 seconds and the two pops again.

the radio does seem to scan and find stations, and the cd player is working too. but absolutely no audio coming out of the speakers.

any idea whats going on?? again. this was the factory installed speakers - shouldn't be any weird wiring going on...

thoughts guys?

update to this - by hitting the side of the dash, the sound comes on...

factory head unit...hasn't seen the light of day since it came from the factory!
