What benefits & salary to expect? (Channel Marketing Specialist @ Asus)
I am going to receive an offer from Asus on Monday morning
the title they will be giving me is Channel Marketing Specialist
taking care of marketing needs of all of the channels
ie, provide banners, graphics, images to distributors, retailers, e-tailers... etc
the job will require me to assist local channels with product launches, marketing strategies, and sometimes even the small details of designing ads
I will be working locally in Richmond, BC for a year
after that, i may be internally transfered to Fremont, CA (near San Jose) to work in the North America headquarter
I have Bachelor of Business Administration degree with specialization in International Business from SFU
what sort of salaries and benefits should I expect or request?

Just a note for others suggesting expected salaries based solely on job title --
The title, which sounds good and can also denote years of experience/speciality in the field, doesn't really give a good indicator on salary.
Based on your previous posts on Careers, you just graduated in 2008.
So doing a comparison on salary ranges for "channel marketing specialist" positions may not really give you a sense on how much of a salary/benefits they will want to give YOU, a new grad with likely some experience in this field but unlikely can be considered in the same light as someone who ISN'T a new grad and has years of relevant experience and same title.
That said, I've run the gambit when it comes to new grad job offers. When I first graduated, I got a job in advertising/marketing where they offered me a very low-balled salary -- which I accepted because I just wanted to finally get my foot in the door (re: catch 22 discussed on the accounting thread). Marketing jobs can have nice titles but many of them start off not very high, advertising jobs IN PARTICULAR. I'd say at least have room to negotiate, which I did not do and regretted it (however, I moved on from that job and got quite a salary bump but the crappy paying job helped me get this job). But realize that you ARE new to the workforce so don't just completely base your salary expectations on what you see is the salary of this position advertised at other companies. You know what I mean?

thanks for the reply and i definitely understand what you mean
when they asked me what my expectation is during the interviews, i didnt give too high of a range either
first time i said between 40k to 50k
second time i went for 40k to 45k
this is base salary but i heard Asus's quarterly bonus is very very competitive and they sometimes give out almost 2 months worth of salary
it is based on company's overall performance and since Asus seems to be doing really well lately, i think there is a lot of potential in the bonus as well
but what sort of benefits should i be looking for?
commute from my current home (burnaby) to the office (richmond) may take up to 1 hour in rush hour traffic
is it fair for me to ask the company to pay for gas?

So if they gave you 40K, would you be happy? Tell them your expectations, there's no sense in lowballing yourself.

You could request call priviledges, but seeing that you're a junior employee, I doubt they'll authorize it.
You should however be paid milage when driving to clients.
Perhaps you could request to work from home? In this case you can write off a lot more items... and get more flexibility in terms of milage, work hours, expenses, etc.

Newbie
Coolspot pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Since you already gave them your salary expectations, don't expect anything higher than the range you gave them. It sounds like what you will be doing is in-house corporate marketing, and for a new grad, 40-45k is the correct range to expect. I've worked in a similar type of position in the past.
The gas compensation is pretty unusual... I wouldn't request that, it's not really reasonable. A lot of people have to commute, and from places farther than Burnaby.
Benefits are usually not negotiable at this level either... you would probably get the same benefits as other full time staff. You should ask and check what type of benefit package they offer, but I doubt it will be negotiable - most companies have a standard plan they give to 99% of their employees. This usually includes some sort of primary and extended healthcare coverage.
The bonus is something you could negotiate on, depending on how good of a candidate you are.
