my advice? ditch the black dress shirt unless you wanna look like a waiter

but if you must wear black, throw this one away, as soon as it starts fading it just looks bad and cheap imo, see above advice :PLast edited by kazkira; Aug 2nd, 2012 at 01:09 AM.

Paint it black, just joking. Dont wash laundry your clothes it will really fade, hand wash your favorite cloths.

This works wonders. You just have to make sure there is no stitching or design that will get dyed. OTOH I have dyed some shirts and when the stitching got dyed, it looked better.
I have also died my GFs clothing. She got roasted red pepper sauce on a baby blue shirt and I died it Royal Blue instead. It looked waaaay better in Royal Blue.

Color this shirt in black. I think after coloring this shirt it will look like a newer one.

Forget hand washing/laundry washing and wash it by dry cleaning.

If its not fading due to cheap fabric or sunlight then it's probably the soap or detergent built up after too many washes. All shirts will eventually become less bright and greyish from the built up detergent after a few washes.
Try soaking your shirt in a combination of (1 cup) vinegar and (1 gallon) hot water for an hour. Soap is alkaline and the low acid in the vinegar will dissolve all of the detergent crap off your shirt.
Then soak in oxyclean solution for a few hours and it should be clean and new looking. Be careful if you have MOP buttons because the vinegar solution will eat away at them.
It's good to get rid of that collar stain and most other stains that the dry cleaner can't get rid of and you have an expensive shirt you don't want to mess up.
Good Luck.
