u know how every time someone posts in a topic, that topic moves to the top? a bump is basically someone posting to put the topic back on the top so it doesnt get overthrown by other topics

It's just another way of moving your message to the top of the pile again. Saying 'bump' is much better than typing "dslfsd;lfjs;lkfjslkfj" or something like that to get your post back to or near the top of the heap.
