I knew people who drove without insurance and even though you'll save money in the long/short run, you'll never know when you need it. Once you need it, you'll at the point of no return and you'll have a life long regret. Insurance is a rip off as everyone knows but it is something you need alongside your driver's license.

It's a minimum $5,000 fine, plus you'll be all but blacklisted from all insurance companies for a long time. So even after you pay off the $5,000 fine, expect to be paying $400-500 per month for insurance, regardless of what kind of car you drive.

Imagine being saddled with a six figure lawsuit you have to pay out of pocket for 30 to 40 years...
That's what you can end up with if you get into an accident.
Get insurance or don't drive.

Don't even think about it. Don't even try to have such idea in your mind, it is deadly.
This is just like driving 130km/h on the freeway with no seat belt, what can happen?? Nothing can happen if you don't get into an accident. But in any case if it happens, there would no turning back.
When you get into an accident with no insurance, even you are not at fault, you'll still be blamed for everything. Because driving without insurance is a crime.

People who are caught driving without insurance, or with invalid insurance in Ontario, face a fine starting at $5,000. The second time you are charged with driving without insurance, you face a $10,000 minimum fine and up to $50, 000.
If people in possession of invalid insurance policies, or no insurance, are involved in an automobile accident they will only be allowed minimal medical and rehabilitation benefits. They will not be allowed to claim wage loss benefits and have lost their right to sue. They may also be personally liable for civil actions for the injuries of the other parties in the accident or other damages that could take a lifetime to repay.

The risk is not worth the savings in unpaid insurance premiums.
Ive had a few close calls with irresponsible cyclists; the type that like to weave in and out of traffic. If you hit one of those guys, even if its not your fault, you can be sued big time.
Just imagine if you hit a pedestrian (regardless of fault).
If you dont have insurance you would be on your own, and you would pay for the rest of your working life.
Its not worth it.

It's stupid....and cheap.
If you can't afford insurance, you can't afford to drive.
Do the world a favor and take the bus.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call $5K a 'relatively minor fine' but you might. That said, even though it's titled a 'minimum fixed fine' of 5K, you can actually be fined less if you can present evidence of financial hardship (yes, the JP does have that discretion under hardship circumstances). Just a little tidbit most people don't know.

a worried friend
here is a question. my freind has a 96 dodge intrepid. he just bought it 3 weeks ago for 900 bucks. with 400,000kms. he says he cannot affod insurance because he has to pay the car off in installments and owes money for different things including a cable bill of 500 and a 1 year old laptop which he owes 1000. he says he cannot afford insurance since it would be like 300 a month. the bank will not give him a loan ebcause he has nothing. he lives at home and his only expenses are the car, his cellphone and food and gas. he has no insurance on his car, his plates are not valid, or his sticker. they are from a 90 mazda. he made the sticker himself. he onky has his g2 which he has had for 3 years and is expiring in a few months. he usually drinks and drives also with his g2. what kind of fines would he be facing if he got pulled over? would he lose his license and have to pay the fine before he can drive again? everyone tells him to get insurance but he is just tooo cheap.

I'm going to go out on limb and say that if his insurance for a 1996 Intrepid is $300 per month, he has had more than a few tickets.
He very well could have his license suspended and would definitely have to pay his fines before he got it back. Tell your "friend" to start walking.
