It's amazing to me that it got shut out of the Oscars completely this year (along with many others, like Drive). I thought it'd get some nominations for sure.

Midnight In Paris was a cute little movie. I'm not the biggest Woody Allen fan but this had a fun, light air about it. Rachel McAdams as the shallow, easy-to-hate fiancee and Kurt Fuller as the ultra-conservative father in law were really good, and I always love Marion Coutillard. Nice little love letter to Paris and the idea of nostalgia.

The Rum Diary
I really enjoyed the movie, Depp was good as usual. I was surprised how good Giovanni Ribsi was, he had a small part in the film but he did a great job. I haven't read the book, but a lot of critics didn't seem to like the movie. I am a fan of nostalgic movies, i even liked The Informers, so this movie gets a 8/10.

As a huge Hunter Thompson fan and this book being one of my favourites, the film translation was nothing short of an abortion. They completely screwed up the intent and feel of the novel and the actors all seemed like they were just going through the motions. I highly recommend the book if you found something to like about the movie, because it is better by miles.

I love WTBR as well, but from what I've read, HST never approved of it and some say he outright hated that film. I think that Depp probably had much more insight into Thompson's life than Murray did since Depp spent a lot of time with Hunter (there's a hilarious story about him staying in Thompson's basement for a few months to prepare for Fear and Loathing, apparently next to a giant - and reportedly live - bombshell, without ever knowing it):
His portrayal of Thompson in Rum Diary, however, seems muddled and watered-down a lot by a terrible script that, like I said, changes some really fundamental things about the story and misses the mark entirely. Depp almost seems bored here, very unlike his portrayal of HST in Fear and Loathing which I found to be excellent.Depp moved into the basement of Thompson's Owl Farm home and lived there for four months, doing research for the role as well as studying Thompson's habits and mannerisms.[13] The actor went through Thompson's original manuscript, mementos and notebooks that he kept during the actual trip.[13] Depp remembers, "He saved it all. Not only is [the book] true, but there's more. And it was worse."[14] Depp even traded his car for Thompson's red Chevrolet Caprice convertible, known to fans as The Great Red Shark, and drove it around California during his preparation for the role.[15] Many of the costumes that Depp wears in the film are genuine articles of clothing that Depp borrowed from Thompson, and the writer himself shaved Depp's head to match his own natural male pattern baldness.[13] Other props, such as Duke's cigarette filter (a TarGard Permanent Filter System), Hawaiian shirts, hats, a patchwork jacket, a silver medallion (given to him by Oscar Acosta) and IDs, belonged to Thompson.[15]
Apparently Josh Hartnett was supposed to play Hunter in Rum Diary, but the project was in development hell for so long that that changed to Depp. Amber Heard was a great casting idea for Chenault but again, the script completely fails to capture the essence of that character.Last edited by flashy_mcflash; Feb 9th, 2012 at 01:15 PM.

THE DESCENDANTS
The trailer just didn't grab me but I love George Clooney and it was nominated for Best Picture. I got free passes from iCoke so I figured why not.
It was great, worthy of the nominations._______________
