GIMP withe the UFRaw plugin. Free and one of the best, if not the best free solutions. Apparently paint.net also supports raw via plugins.

Nikon user here so I use View NX2. I'm pretty sure Capture NX2 cost a little $. Recently bought Lightroom 4 but still need to learn how to use it as coming from View NX2, LR4 seems to be so much more complicated to use.

I use DPP and Lightroom 4.3 but you'd like some free software...
RawTherapee is a very good powerful and free solution IMHO used it quite a bit before buying LR or UFRaw as mentione earlier with or without GIMP very powerful and freeware as well.Last edited by pompoco; Dec 29th, 2012 at 01:06 AM.

ACDSee Pro v6 and its $30 off right now at $69.99
Fairly comparable to Lightroom in function but has had color management and soft proofing for several versions.

Using LR4 right now... it doesn't feel too hard to use/pick up, but i'd imagine it being really difficult to master the program.
