What RAM do I need?

I have a VAIO laptop, according to the spec sheet I need DDR2 PC2 4200 SODIMM 533MHZ 200PIN

I took it to a RAM shop to get the same ram only 1GB sticks installed and was told the ram currently in was DDR2 PC2 5300 667 (333Mhz?), 240PIN.... Im confsued.. as this was 2x the price so I didnt bother. Anyone know a way of figuring out exactly what ram I need so I can order it?

I installed everest it says in the chipset supported mem types: DDR2-400, 533, and 667... im assuming 667 is the fastest.... so Tigerdirect charges 149.99 for a single stick of corsair value select 667 ram, whereas http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=CORSAIR
is 2 sticks for 110... so will this ram work if I order it?

As long as its DDR2 sodimm, almost any DDR2 sodimm brand/speeds will work (like the MacBook, they are picky with ram).

Jesus that's cheap. I'm gonna have to upgrade in a couple months. Hopefully by then it'll be $70 for 2GB.

Pretty much, 533, 667, 800, etc.. MHz are just for overclocking purposes. So if your not overclocking 533 or 667 would be best, unless you can find a good price on better ones.

If the spec sheet tells you that you need DDR2 PC2 4200 SODIMM 533MHZ 200PIN, then that's what you should get.

DO NOT get the 240 pin rams cuz those will not fit in your notebook ram slot cuz those are for desktops and 200 pin rams are only for notebooks.

As for the speed, I would not go over 533MHZ(recommended on spec) because most likely your motherboard will not support anything faster than what's factory recommended.


You should have 2 ram slots in your notebook... are you buying one to add on??.. cuz even if your Mobo supports speed over 533MHZ and you're keeping your old ram then it will take on the speed of the slower of the 2 stick of rams so therefore there's no point of buying a faster stick of ram if you're adding on to what you already have.

Yes, those ram should work IF it's true that your MOBO supports 667MHZ... I find it weird that your spec sheet only says it supports 533MHZ and not 667MHZ if in fact it does...

Those rams are cheap cuz they're "value" rams..not high performance rams.
