We adopted an older Poodle named Bully (he was at least close to 10 years old when we got him). One day he had an epilepsy attack, fell into a very shallow pond and drowned as he couldn't control himself. My parents had him removed and gone super-fast like a casualty evacuation before my sister found out because "she'd get upset" and not want to go near there anymore. 20+ years later and I still wonder what they told her, whether she thinks he ran away and never came home or something.

The first family pet I had was a big old Rottweiler. My first pet of my own was a hamster. The hamster wasn't my favorite. The pet I liked the most was my coturnix quail but you'd have to check your bylaws and they're not for everyone. I just lost my last one and I'm debating getting another even though I liked them so much. Other birds like cockatiels, budgies, conures can be fantastic pets but they can be noisy and messy and they need a lot of time and attention. I prepare fresh foods for mine every day on top of the seeds and pellets and there's a lot of bird proofing to do if you let them out. They're very interactive even if they aren't hand tame but if you want something you can hold get a properly weaned, handfed baby from a breeder and IMO you should have the wings clipped.
Reptiles can be an excellent choice if you want something quiet, small, handleable, interesting and a little less demanding. Corn snakes are hardy, gentle, stay small and don't have too many needs. Get the temperatures and humidity right (there are plenty of products that take most of the work out in this area) keep it clean, feed it appropriate prey items every 5-7 days or so and handle it at least once a week and that's about it. They come in plenty of colors and patterns. They don't tend to bite but even if they do it's nowhere near the pain of even a hamster or bird bite.
Crested geckos are even easier. In most places they can be kept at room temperature, misted down once or twice a day (again, products out there to handle temps and humidity for the most part) and fed a powder mixed with water called Repashy Crested Gecko Diet. They come in a huge range of colors and patterns too, can be handled and can make gorgeous displays in part of your house with a nicely decorated enclosure using either real or fake wood and rock pieces and plants. The initial setup for most beginner reptiles is the biggest cost but maintaining them is usually really inexpensive. Unexpected coss can come up with any pet like bet bills or a broken cage but I think they're worth it.
