What is VGA (RGB) to component video cable used for?

I tried to connect my computer to my 42" Samsung plasma TV using a VGA (RGB) to component video cable. Unfortunately the TV said that the video input was an unsupported signal.

I then tried connecting to a 4:3 CRT TV and that did not work. I then connected to a HP f2304 computer display which also has component in and that was also a no go. I did see the apple icon on boot but the picture was green and not positioned correctly.

I thought maybe it was a defective cable so I exchanged cables but that did not give me an image either.

Does anyone know what the VGA to component cables are used for? Has anyone had success connecting their Hacintosh to a TV using this type of cable?

Check the documentation for the cable - you might need to tweak some video settings on your graphics card in order for it to work. Change the sync or the video timing, or select a specific resolution, for example.

There is no good video even at boot.
I do not think I saw anything in my BIOS to set video settings.
