Jeesh, good question! I too have firmly held back from installing SP2 after reading too much information about the bugs in it, software programs not working, internet and networking connections going wonky, etc. I hate how even when I click on 'don't install SP2' and then 'Don't remind me ever again' checkbox is marked by me, and lo' and behold, up the auto windows update pops up, ensuring it is dutifully reminding me. I like the windows update automated notification of new up-dates, and I have d/l'ed a lot that are not in relation to SP2, so I keep that feature turned on. I hadn't heard anything about them forecefully installing anything like SP2 on the pc, but I know I have to watch very carefully, or else it pops up time and time again as stating I need that update. I too have a legit copy of windows, it came pre-installed on my HP pc. Argh.... noooooooo, I don't want to go to SP2!

What will happen if I don't install Sp2 before the 12th?
I'm not really interested in installing Sp2 because I hate having it forced on us. It might help security they say, but I much prefer using software of my choice to protect my pc. Will my machine stop working? On the 12th of this month, Sp2 is going to be forcefully installed on our pc's and I'm curious as to what'll happen if I don't let it (if possible mind you). I gather knowing MS that you'll have a button saying 'Your pc won't work any more if you don't install' and then the install will force me to image my pc as it'll mess everything up.
The only reason I even use Windows is because Everquest 2 does not work on Linux, but once it does, I will migrate again.
It's not a piracy issue either as I do own a copy of WinXp for my laptop- It's principle that they say 'You don't have a choice'.

You can install it and turn off AV and FW if you want to.
Starting next Tuesday, April 12, machines running Windows XP without Service Pack 2 installed will no longer be able to block delivery of the much-discussed update. Machines without it installed will have the potentially 200-plus MB SP2 downloaded to their computers, no questions asked.
Check out Microsoft's TechNet site at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2aumng.mspx for more details...
UPDATE: Time is running out! Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 is only available for a period of 240 days (8 months) from August 16, 2004. At the end of this period (after April 12, 2005), Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems

The question is, what to do with those people who have a 'borrowed' version of windows?
Perhaps get a new 'borrowed' version online with sp2 on it already?
anyone try yet?_______________

So you guys figure I ought to just go ahead and do it, since it's inevitable? I can only imagine what my 8 year old son will think if his Beloved games don't work properly after this. Especially his Star Wars Lego game.
Maybe I will give it a try today; I'll check back to read more postings, in a little while here...
Thanks!

from what I'm reading from Intense's link, nothing will happen if you do not install SP2 before april 12.
IF you want to do a windows update AFTER April 12th, then you have no choice but to install SP2. If you do not do a windows update after April 12th, then NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. You won't be forced to install SP2.
So if you do not want to have sp2, turn off automatic updates and you will not get sp2.
The issue here is that any new security updates XP releases after april 12th, you cannot get (unless you install sp2). This is bad for both you and the community. Bad for you because you'll get hijacked at some point, and bad for the community because your computer will become a zombie to infect other computers.
I personally use sp2 and find no problems with the software that I run. It is also good at blocking stuff and warning me of possible security problems.
I don't really understand the huge problem of installing SP2 (corporate systems are different). It is just a large windows update pack.

I agree with the above, one shouldn't run windows xp sp1 without receiving the neccessary up-dates, and it does appear that come April 12th, there will be no more updates for sp1.
So... I will have to think seriously about switching to sp2; hopefully by now, most of the bugs and kinks have been ironed out. I don't think it's fair either, if I continue to run my pc with sp1 without having the neccessary safety updates, as it does pose a risk to other pc's as well. Here's an interesting link to a thread on another forum about this issue:

From what I understand this only affects large corporations because the blocking tool for automatic updates has only been available to them, and not small business, or consumers. Either way however automatic updates have to be enabled for SP2 to be installed, so even going to the windows updates website will not mean you are installing SP2.
