I'm not Catholic, so pardon my ignorance; can you give up something so immaterial and have it count for lent?
If that's the case, what's to stop people from giving up clipping toe nails or cereal for lent?LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Harkonnen for this post.

I think it's more about giving up something important to you....so if something immaterial is important to you, giving it up seems like a doubly-good idea. Doesn't it?
(By the way, since when are toe nails or cereal immaterial?)_______________

I guess that makes sense. I always thought that one would have to give up something material (ie meat, entertainment, etc), something with substance in order to have it count.
I just used clipping nails and cereal as examples of "stupid" stuff to give up. Though, I don't think I could give up cereal. I needs my daily fix of Almond Goatmeal Crisp.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Harkonnen for this post.

for some, a sacrifice is giving up face-book :) a teenager may find it tougher to give up a cell phone than not eat meat. An adult may find the opposite true._______________

I'm giving up IE7 for lent.
Its a bad habit, its no good for you, and it encompasses the seven deadly sins:
-Lust (we all wanted it in the beginning because we thought it'd be cool)
-Gluttony (have you seen the resources it uses)
-Greed (M$FT)
-Sloth (its bloody slow)
-Wrath/Anger (my reaction to when it crashes - frequently)
-Envy/Jealousy (in reaction to FF)
-Hubris (thinking its the best out there)
Yay firefox!_______________
