What's the best camera available on the airmiles.ca site?

Looking for a replacement for my canon sd200 2.0mp point and shoot. Id prefer something quite compact but dislike how my elph shoots indoors, dark and grainy. Decided that I can use my airmiles for the camera but have no idea which is the best camera available there. The olympus look decent but XD cards? Yuck.

https://www.airmiles.ca/arrow/RewardsPr ... ageIndex=1

Any help and advice you can give is appreciated.

I would never discount a camera based on the memory card format. If the images it produces are better than the other's, that is what matters to me.

To get good indoor pictures, you need to know why your current camera is producing grainy dark pictures.

I'd probably go with the Canon A570 IS out of all those. Bulkier than your elph but you can't always have it all. Your choices are limited.

Compacts + Non-grainy in dark situations = Hard to find.

Why, you ask.

Because the sensors in small cameras are rarely large enough to be able to capture enough light in a small amount of time without flash and so they are forced to compensate with graininess. I am sure I am skipping out of many technical aspects but this is the general idea.

First of all, if you are looking at the best ones, look at the ones with the highest reward miles (as they are probably worth more and, generally, things that are more expensive tend to be better, not always though). Then you want to google reviews for them. I myself an considering an SD1000.

The A570 is pretty good too, review here- > http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras ... 14644.html.

I have no idea about the Sonys offered since they lack model names and I only know much about the T series offered by them. In addition, the Kodak one looks good but at 5 megapixels, costing that many reward miles and it not being portable is pretty much a no-no for you already. I don't know much about it either.

I would personally go for the SD1000 if I wanted a compact. Not sure about how it performs in higher ISO, you can check dpreview (google it) for their review of it and their sample pictures.

The Sonys on there are the entry-level S-series. Not worth the money.

My choice would be either the A570IS or the SD1000. One's better specified (image stabilizer, manual control), and the other is a lot smaller. Don't get a Kodak.

Thanks for the replies, the SD1000 is on sale for 1700 airmiles right now. Any comment on the olympus ones? I know people who own them and they have no complaints. The amount of airmiles is of no concern i have around 16000, so if i use 2 or 3 thousand it doesnt matter.

The only Olympus worth looking at there is the 790SW... and that's only because it is weatherproof. As for image quality, I'd say Olympus had other priorities to deal with.

I've found that the cameras on the airmiles site are vastly over priced compared to the real market.

How can free miles be over priced?

Well, the number of miles charged for a $100 camera can usually get a $150 something else (like gift certificates).

For example, the HP Photosmart M547 is listed for 1,100 airmiles and has a retail price from anywhere from $88 to $100 (according to **********). For 1,100 airmiles, you can get 6.28 - $20 Shell gift cards or 5.92 - $25 Chapters gift cards which is approx $125 to $148 worth of purchases. Even when you take GST and PST into account, you would still come out ahead.

The CanonTM PowerShot A570IS is a worse deal at 2,425 airmiles for a $200 camera at Best Buy.ca. For 2,425 airmiles, you can get 13.85 - $20 Shell gift cards for a value of $277....

Now different gift cards will cost a different amount of airmiles for the same value so you will need to shop around...

I'd say the canon would be your best bet, excellent quality and the best camera is the 570IS but larger than the sd models. I have a canon sd800 with IS, excellent quality pics and very compact.

If the camera is $200 at best buy that will cost me $224 with tax plus shipping of another 20 or so.....approx $250. $277 worth of gas gives me 277 worth of gas tax included, $25-30 difference? The camera is 2425 airmiles no tax no shipping delivered to my door for about 2 months of collected airmiles. Good deal for me whether it is for you or not.
Also i will never use my airmiles for gas cards, i write off 100% of my gas through my business anyways and i might not be able to write off my camera.

I'd go with the Canon powershot A570 is. I just bought it for $165 tax in at staples a few weeks ago and best one I have used ever. Only complaint is that it is chunky!

that is an amazing deal how did you get it that cheap?
Im leaning towards that one as I'm reading many poor reviews of the sd1000 in low light, very grainy no matter what iso setting

The A570IS and SD1000 share the same sensor and same processor. The results you'd see on the SD1000 are similar to what you'd see on the A570IS. Its just got a different lens, a different body, and slightly different specifications (manual control, IS, etc).

You don't think the larger lense of the A570IS will help it take better pictures indoors and in poor lighting conditions vs the SD1000?

No. All it really does is give the camera a longer zoom range.

I went with the sd1000 for 1700 airmiles. I also ordered the kingston 2gb sd card from dell for 14.99 with free shipping.
Thanks for all your help.

Bump...

I have 3200 airmiles to spend on a new camera.

I'm trying to decide between the Canon SD1100 8.0 MP and the Pentax S12 12.0 MP.

Any help?

Skip the Pentax. 12mp is too many and the Pentax user interface is lousy to say the least. No image stabilization on it either.
Deal with it.
