As I am typing this, I am currently using the xiaomi mi 8 (which I got in Hong Kong) on the Rogers network and so far no major issues. It's very smooth and the camera quality is really nice for a xiaomi device (not yet up to p20 pro quality). BTW, I was using a galaxy s4 previously.
I post, you decide.

I'm thinking of getting a new "Chinese" cellphone as well.
But not sure what one has to look for to make sure it works in Canada.
I want to spend a lot less $C400-500, something around $100 to $150 is what I'm thinking.
But all I want is a good camera since I would use the cell phone more for taking pictures than for calls. Currently I have a 5 Mp, I'm looking for 8 Mp and up
Also a TF (or Micro-SD) slot
That's about it except not too big.

Would this work in Canada?

what you want is probably not going to work given the circumstances. Good camera, new smartphone, low cost. You are not going to get all 3 of those variables.

it also depends on what you mean by a good camera, from my experiences a good camera is something like Iphone 6, Samsung S6 and up. Xiaomi Redmi camera is average from my experience.

It doesn't look like it'll work in Canada too well. Only 1 LTE band for most Canadian carriers: https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-ch ... i-redmi-6a

I am interested in getting the same phone in HK. How much did you pay for it? Does EVERYTHING including NFC, Netflix, etc... work? Any drawback?

One member of my family has a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337m
The camera on that suits me fine for my purposes - so I was looking for something equivalent - better is of course also OK

That phone doesn't show up on the Kimovil site which seems to be UK centric, so I couldn't check how that compares to the Xiaomi.
On that Samsung phone, all it says "4G - yes - LTE - HSPA+ which doesn't tell me anything in comparison to that Xiaomi

I got your PM but i'll reply here just in case anyone else is thinking of getting the phone.

I got phone at the official Xiaomi store in Mongkok and it cost $3699 HKD, which was about $630 CAD that I paid. It is the 6gb RAM, 128 gb ROM in blue btw. I've been using it for a month and no major issues so far. I don't use Netflix or NFC so I don't know but I do know that the phone does have NFC.

In that case, the Xiaomi phone will be fine.

But anyhow, this phone probably will not work with all the bands. Check out this thread.

I'm looking to get a new phone as well, would like to keep it in the $300-350 range. I've been eyeing the newly released Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, just wondering if it's any good? And will it work fine on Rogers network?
Thanks!

Check kimovil.
Has info on compatibility & prices on the phone(s) you're looking at.

Holy Cow!

I just read a few pages here and there but there seem to be a lot of issues with Ali Express

Last time I was looking for a replacement for my current ancient phone, this came up as a recommendation.
I wanted a smaller screen than the Samsung S4 (and still do)
https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z3 ... t-6538.php

Price on ebay is around $US 90.- which fits nice into what I want to pay, but people claim those phones they get from China are clones.
I suppose that makes sense considering it's a 2014 model.
That's why I gravitated back to the Xiaomi - also because it's from DealExtreme - I have bought items from them many times before, never had an issue.

Look, if you are that concerned about getting a fake phone. Go the official Xiaomi store on Aliexpress. They are having the 11.11 sale in a couple weeks so its the right time for you.

thats one nice looking phone. Which provider are you with? I am going to Hong Kong soon and was looking for a new phone but worried about what is compatible with Canadian network.

This place looks like it has good reviews with a lot of the chinese brands

I am on Rogers. I switched from an AT&T branded Galaxy S4 which had WAY LESS bands than the Mi 8 and I managed to get LTE service. btw, you'll have to setup the APN after you insert your SIM. when I put in my SIM for the first time, I did get service but later I noticed, I was connected to the chatr network and I had to change it back to Rogers. lol

The Mi 8 has LTE bands (according to GSM Arena):

1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 17(700), 20(800), 34(2000), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)

The important ones are bands 4, 7 and 12.

however, if you are looking for support for more bands, I suggest you wait until the Mi MIX 3 is released.
I post, you decide.

when did you buy it? i am thinking about buying a new phone. Would sales rep at the store know if it works internationally?
